First post, first smartphone. I'm learning. I got a Droid Incredible last week. It is a little freaky that anyone who gets hold of my phone can access my gmail, calendar, facebook and other programs with passwords installed. I did use the native pattern password to unlock the screen, and I don't want to make security such an issue that it is a PITA to use my apps.

    I've looked at:
    App Protector Pro
    SplashID Password
    Theft Aware
    Lookout

What is the best way to manage security without making things too inconvenient?

Are there other security concerns I should be aware of? I read the sticky about being careful about downloading widgets/apps and the permissions they ask for, and I haven't downloaded anything yet!

I have Lookout on my Droid and I love it! First of all, it's free... I've downloaded like 30 apps on my droid and Lookout scans all of them to check for viruses and malware. If you're worried about losing your phone, you can locate your phone and make it scream from their webapp. Ive done it like 5 times... left my phone in a cab once and I actually found the cab it was in!

Highly recommend it. They also just won an award.. if you're interested in reading about it GetJar names Gettie Award 2010 mobile application winners | VentureBeat

    hope this helps :)

Just watch the permissions that they ask for, but it's usually not an issue. Just start to question things if they're asking for access to your Contacts and it's a simple note taking app. Best is just to look at number of downloads and then at a couple of the reviews, can't go to far wrong that way.

How much is necessary to feel secure about the info on one's phone?

Type in a password to access each program like gmail, etc?
    Virus protection?
A way to find or brick your phone if you lose it?

I mean, I type in my passwords for accounts on my desktop, and I'm not carrying it around in my pocket. Right now I feel awfully vulnerable. Or am I being paranoid?

I don't want to complicate everything in the name of security to the point that it is no longer convenient to use the phone.

    Thanks!

You know, speaking of permissions, Lookout has an awful lot of them. How do I know it is OK?
