Today i noticed that when i leave an application either by backing out or pressing home, sense has to reload. It first flashes the HTC sign, then it takes about 10 seconds to load my home screen. Now this morning i installed an update for "spare parts". Im assuming this was the culprit so I uninstalled. Still having the problem though. Extremely annoying! Please help!

Two standard questions for this sort of thing:

Are you using a task killer?

    Have you restarted the phone?

Makes me wonder how much stuff is running on your phone if the OS has to restart just to sort things.

I have advanced task manager, which i've had for a month and a half with no issues. Rarely use it to be honest. And I just tried rebooting. Nada.

Sense may be restarting, but are you using it? Seems to when I went through the whole screw sense, im using home phase, it was almost like it confused my phone. Also, atk could be auto killing something.

As far as I know, Advanced task manager doesn't kill apps automatically. And it hasn't given me any problems whatsoever. It looks like the spare parts update is to blame. Ive uninstalled though, and no results. About to contact the developer.

I think I figured it out. Spare parts has a setting now I'd not noticed before the update. Activity/Process Management. It defaults to an aggressive mode. I changed it to normal mode, rebooted and so far so good no more Sense restarts.

Killing the built in home app certainly qualifies as 'agressive'.

I'm not wondering how many apps are in the device. I'm wondering how much is running simultaneously.

When I go into /applications/manage applications and sort by size I most often see the browser at the top, then Astro then Google Maps, Mail, Market, Voice Search then Touch Input.

The relative sizes in there never seem to have much effect on the device, no matter what I'm doing with it; no lag or inadvertent rebooting, etc.

But if I leave a game for another game, then use the browser and a message comes in and I respond to it for a while then make a call then go to a video then go back to one of the games, I'll see a small amount of a slowdown if I have an email to write or whatever.

But not much. That's why I keep wondering, and am amazed every time, when I see posts in here about reboots, long lag, slow downs and freezes with the Eris. I just do not see that behavior on mine, so, as I mentioned in my first post in this thread, it makes me wonder how much is running on the Eris you're using because I cannot think of anything else that would cause a reboot other than a defective device.

But I see you may have resolved the issue with a setting, so.. cool. :)

Aggressive is an understatement. I'll re-install and change the setting. I'll report back with results.

Thank you Schmidtrock! Problem solved. Anyone know what the purpose of that setting is? Can't see a reason to use it. Anyway, thanks for everyones input, this forum is the proverbial shiznit!

It seems to be a built in app/process killer, a very 'aggressive' one.

This is a GREAT reason NOT to have a task killer on any android device.

I've seen you're a big fan of NOT using task killers. I am the same.

Now now, lets not open that can of worms:). My task killer was not to blame in any way shape or form. Advanced task manager is just that, a manager. She's no killer. And yes, I've applied female characteristics to this app. I just can't get her out of my life!

You are right, ATM was not at fault on this. However, that new addition to spare parts sounds like a full on automatic task killer, which is usually the cause of Sense constantly restarting.

Your phone comes with an advanced task manager pre-installed. It's called Android. Trust it and let it do it's work.

Im no task killer fan-boy, BUT, i have had several apps open at the same time and seen my phone lag. One press of the button and voila, speed back to normal. As i said I rarely use it, but once in awhile i find it helpful. For normal use, yes, android os keeps things under control. Sorry this post got sidetracked. I'm finished!

Sorry, I don't mean to start an argument. It's just my fear that when Android hits version 3.0 or 4.0 and does an even more phenomenal job of managing resources, people will still be hung up on task killers and their fear of background tasks thanks to our experience with Windows.

No worries. The task killer debate goes on. I prefer not to talk about it in fear that Of the Damned may bite me and make me one of her eternal slaves. Hmmmm, maybe i SHOULD talk about it more.....
