ok, 4real tho... the longer i have the g1, the more i think i should of just waited for a better device, or maybe even stuck with my tmobile dash. i mean yea it has google and all but what phone wit internet wont let you go to google??? im just sayin, the apps are wack! best thing we have is imeem and google maps...plus there is no video recorder,no task manager, the list goes on... ppl keep sayin they didnt put all kinds of features on the device bczu they want ppl to be able to make stuff like this for the phone, well bad idea cuz it aint workin, ppl are only makin the dumbest things they can think of for the phone.... not to mention tmobile prolly has the smallest 3g network in the world so most apps that come from iphone ideas are worthless in most places. the games are even worse than the apps. best thing we have is pacman and cards... wow! im only wondering if i am the only person with a g1 that thinks theses things and much more disadvantages too.... does anybody feel me on this at all?????

It's been out for a little over a month. Give it time.

This phone has only been out for a month! What did you expect? Give it a few more months before 3rd party (pay) software is released, and ultimately available via torrent.

honestly man I believe most of us knew what we were getting and that is a new op system from Google on the ground floor... I didn't expect anything, this is essentially the beginning of a new era….. Imagine what would have happened if everyone reacted this way when windows 3.1 came out… if everyone said it sucks and had too many bugs and didn’t have enough features we would all still run dos and edit our batch files with edlin …. You need to stick with it long enough for all the kinks to be fixed and features to develop if you wanted something with bells and whistles right now instead of potential 6 months from now the iphone may have been a better choice for you…. I have had this phone since day 1 of the release and they have already made HUGE strides in what was out from day 1 with Flash player coming soon you will not be able compare in 6 months…

C'mon guys, a little respect? Being disrespectful might be great for your macho ego, but in the end it just makes you look bad.

Don't forget, it also gets you - and your multiple accounts (or coworkers you've brought on to battle your side) - banned.

This is the end of the hints and threats. We have broke out our ban sticks.

Honestly, I understand. I look at my girlfriend's iPhone, and whimper at all the cool things she has... a lot of them free. I look at what I gave up on my tmobile wing, and again, feel sad. The G1 has a ton of potential ,but it will take time for that potential to come around. And, I spent a lot of money on potential. I probably would have been better off buying another phone. Don't get me wrong, I like the G1, but I also look at how much it is lacking and feel a bit sad.

I am so amazed there are so many people more concerned with instant gratification rather than overall product…. I don’t think anyone here is saying the g1 is the best phone but as with all new software it takes time to develop especially since no one is allowed to charge for software yet so all you are seeing app wise is the taste tests, samples and free ware and it shows yes but when the good stuff comes at the beginning of the new year all those who couldn’t wait beyond 3 months are going to look back and wish they had kept the phone…. Don’t worry it’s coming but it will take a few months to see “real proof of the potential”

My take on the Android Operating System:

    1. The most important and relevant piece of information to keep in mind is that the T-Mobile G1 with Google is just that. It's a piece of hardware that showcases the brand new operating system built by Google. I hear people complain about the hardware issues and it's frustrating because hardware specs for this phone have been out since September. If you didn't do your research to find out what this phone would be capable of, that's your mistake.

    2. Google/T-Mobile/HTC did not market this phone at all prior to release. There's the big difference between this phone and the Iphone. Apple filled the marketplace with ads galore before the release of the original Iphone (not to mention how much more they spent on the Iphone 3g). My opinion is that all of us on this forum bought the G1 because we're pretty tech savvy to begin with. That's the reason we knew about this phone and OS long before release even without traditional media coverage.

    3. Finally, I agree that the Iphone has made the industry think about phones much more intuitively than before. Comparisons will be made and rightfully so. However, these phones are so very different from a fundamental standpoint that it's difficult to really compare them.

I admit that I hope the average consumer will soon see the advantages of an open source mobile OS. For those that still don't agree that Android is open source, at least we can agree that it is far more open than the alternatives. Ultimately, it's us, the developers and the consumers that are allowed to choose the direction that Android goes, not those who oversee the submitted apps for every other mobile OS. That's the reason we should still be very excited.

Seems to me like people are choosing sides and the line is G1 or Iphone.... why can't it be a normal discussion I like G1 they like Iphone who cares as long as the phone I have makes me happy than there shouldn't be any issues and should be that way for everyone...

early adopters of anything need to know it is not going to be as good as you hope in the beginning. Just like the iPhone had issues when it first came out.

I came from the sidekick and there are only two things I want on this phone. A "sidekick" like aim client and the flash plugin. Otherwise, I love this phone.

Time people. Time. God, we live in such an impatient world. What if in 1996 people were already complaining about: "Man, how come my cell phone doesn't have a camera." or "I wanna go on the internet on my cell phone. Why they hell can't I do that?" Point is that it's all evolution. Everybody always wants something. My latest was that I wanted a 3G phone. The arguments in all the T-Mo forums that I'm a member of over when 3G is gonna be switched on and when we're gonna have a 3G smartphone went on for ages. Now we have both and it's "When is 4G gonna come." Give it time is all I'm saying. At least 6-12 months. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Did the disrespectful post get deleted, I don't see anything rude here? Instead of deleting the post, it would be better for coherence if you just deleted the text and put in something like:

[post removed by moderator - terms of use violation: disrespect.]

    Just a suggestion.

It appears the convo has since been deleted, yes.

Thanks for the suggestion. If the mod that went back and deleted it all choses to undelete and do what you suggested that's fine. If not that's fine too.

I just unbanned the main.. but, not the other accounts. We talked a bit in email the other day and I think it has been resolved.

    Happy T-Giving folks!

I agree with most of this.
I got the iPhone in November 2007. It was great, but was missing a few nice bits and pieces. With the release of v2.0 software in June I got the AppStore and Exchange push email. Very nice.

I now have a G1 which I currently only use for developing apps. But I think that a few months down the line when the G1 development community gets up to speed we will see the G1 overtake the iPhone.

For my part, I'm developing apps simultaneously for iPhone, Android, MS Mobile and Symbian with friends. We may look at Blackberry as well in the future.

There's a place for every OS, and due to people's differing priorities and usage patterns, every OS will continue to sell. I love iPhone but I know it will never dominate. I think Android has a great shot, but the others will continue to live on for a few years yet.

Stick with your G1 - it has big potential. But keep an eye on the others, you never know what they'll come up with.

Pk so I thought the same the sec I got this phone b.c I was coming from the iphone which even that is just getting good (after a year) so you got to give it time. Plus paid apps haven't come out yet which are the good ones. And come on man its been out 1 month and they have already announced FLASH. If that's not fast devolping then idk what is

I got an ipod touch a few months after they released it.

    • the music/ipod part always crashed or locked up. It still does in fact
    • it sometimes won't recognize in itunes
    • Safari would ALWAYS choke and crash
    • the stock apps would lock up at times
    • it didn't even COME with all the things that the iphone had (and it was the SAME device)
    • the app store didn't come out until many months (a year?) afterwards. Before that, you had to get jailbroken apps and out of the zillions that were out there, like 5-6 were really decent/solid/useful
    • My friend has the iPhone 3g. He constantly complains about the battery drain on it. Much like the G1.
    • I hear bberry Storm and Bold users are seeing short battery lifes
I'm risking owning this thing for good (right now I'm under the 14 day trial) but with each day I like it a little bit more (the first few days I was appalled by it). I'm excited to see what the developers will come out for it. My guess it'll be the same as the iphone's apps...300 billion junk apps and 30 useful ones.
