    Setting up aosp

This is just some general information to get aosp's rom set up. aosp has released a stable version so I'm starting with aosp v0.9.9.2

    NANDROID:
Always do a nandroid before flashing a new rom;)

    AOSPMOD:
Download aosp 0.9.9.2 from here http://bit.ly/fxm8Fb and put it on the root of your sd card. If this is your first time flashing a new rom or coming from a different rom, you must wipe everything. WIPE data, Davlik cache and cache. Boot to recovery, wipe and then flash the rom. If you want the market and such, you MUST flash the gapps. Flash the gapps directly after flashing the rom. Look here for information about aospMod [ROM][GPL][STABLE] aospMod v0.9.9.1 | AOSP 2.2.1 (Froyo) [12/05/2010] - xda-developers

    GAPPS:
If you want access to the Android Market and access to your Google account, you MUST flash the gapps after flashing the rom. The new market gapps are out, look here http://bit.ly/epn0yl These are bone stock gapps, so once you sign into your google account, you will have to download Gmail, Google Maps....from the market. Your contacts will be synced and all previously purchased Market applications will be in your downloads in the market.

    APPS 2 SD:
Apps 2 SD is native in Froyo roms. You can move applications to your SD card without having to partition your card.

    VOICEMAIL:
In AOSP roms, there is NO voicemail. There are 3 options you can choose from. Google Voice, Sprint VVM or Youmail. You can download Google Voice from the android market. Look here for Sprint VVM xda-developers - View Single Post - [ROM] CyanogenMod-6.1.0-RC1 for Hero CDMA - V6.1.0-RC1 (10/28/2010) Flash from recovery;) Look here for good information on setting up Youmail http://androidforums.com/sprint-hero-all-things-root/225194-youmail-great-app-your-phone.html (Thanks DonB)

    NAVIGATION:
You can either use Google Navigation that is bundled with Google maps or you can use Sprint Navigation, found here xda-developers - View Single Post - [ROM] CyanogenMod-6.1.0-RC1 for Hero CDMA - V6.1.0-RC1 (10/28/2010) Install the apk

    OVERCLOCKING:
The stock kernel in 0.9.9.1 can be overclocked to 768 but to overclock, you should download OC Widget or SetCPU from the Android Market. You can set the frequencies of screen off and screen on through these applications. Frequencies can vary from phone to phone so you might have to play with the frequencies to find that 'happy' place for your phone.;)

    BATTERY ISSUES:
Sometimes after flashing a new rom, some may run into battery issues. Battery may drain quicker than normal. There are a couple things you can do to help with battery issues.
    1. Wipe your battery stats: This may take a little time but it may give a better indication of your battery life. Charge battery to 100%(DO NOT UNPLUG FROM CHARGER)> Boot to Recovery> Wipe battery stats> Reboot Phone> Unplug phone from charger> Drain battery completely to 0%(TILL PHONE POWERS OFF)> Plug phone back into charger(DO NOT UNPLUG)> Charge phone back to 100%
    2. Try the Battery Tweak: Download and flash the battery tweak Collin_ph battery tweak V3 RC2 is released! - xda-developers You can set frequencies within the battery tweak so PLEASE UNINSTALL Oc Widget and/or SetCPU first before trying the battery tweak;)

    MMS FIX:
If you have trouble with MMS messages, look here for the mms fix xda-developers - View Single Post - Discussion of Cyanogenmod Nightlies for Hero CDMA Flash from recovery

    SIGNAL FIX:
The signal bars in AOSP roms by nature have fewer bars than a sense rom. Don't worry if you only have one bar, your signal is not any worse. There is a fix for the signal bars, look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773964

    PRL AND PROFILE UPDATE:
In AOSP roms, you will NOT be able to update your PRL or Profile Update within the rom. You will have to flash to a sense rom to update both. Do this: make a nandroid of your current setup> Download LiquidSense from here [ROM] LiquidSense 2.1 Stable|PngOpt|ZipAlgn|Odex|No Bloat - xda-developers Then wipe everything, data, Davlik cache and cache and flash LiquidSense> Update your PRL and Update Profile> Nandroid restore back to aospMod 0.9.9.1

    RADIO UPDATE:
THIS RADIO UPDATE IS FOR A CDMA SPRINT HERO. Download and flash the radio from recovery, look here New_Radio-Basebnd.2.42.02.10.29.zip - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download No need to wipe anything;)

    JIT:
JIT is disabled in the 0.9.9.1 release. Important, some phones may experience troubles with JIT enabled, so enable at your own risk:eek: There are 2 ways to enable JIT.
    1. Download Root Explorer from the Android market. This is a paid application. Look here xda-developers - View Single Post - [ROM][GPL][STABLE] aospMod v0.9.9.1 | AOSP 2.2.1 (Froyo) [12/05/2010]
    2. Download ES File Explorer from the Android market. This is a free apllication. Look here xda-developers - View Single Post - World cup football programs (free) - update: + new program Change fast to jit

    LAUNCHER:
aospMod has a stock launcher. If you would like, you can download either ADW from the Android Market or try Launcher Pro from the market. Download Home Switcher from the market to change the launcher;)

    LAG ISSUES:
Always make sure you have a solid GPS lock. Use the Places app that is included with Google Maps to get a solid GPS lock. Always keep cache cleared in Manage Applications. Try CacheCleaner NG from the market, you can clear all cache from internals and externals on the phone. Always keep text messaging log clear and keep phone log clear, if possible;)

Hopefully some of these things will help withe aospMod experience:)

I just bookmarked this so that I can reference it this weekend when I flash the AOSP Android 2.2 ROM. Maybe you should mention the signal fix too, for people who are concerned about that, even though its just a graphical change and a real "fix" per se. :)

Very good post, andygu3. I gave you props for that. ;)

What do I lose when I wipe cache and Davlik? I have only done that when setting up a new ROM and not once everything is setup. Of course I will Nandroid, but ...

Flashed them over without wiping cache or Dalvik. Worked great. Also solved my issues with Weatherbug. :)
