First time smart phone owner here.

I was wondering if there's a way to toggle off 3G when it's not needed but have it turn on when an app needs to sync or when I go on the Internet. I know Tasker can do the Internet one, but can it turn on when apps sync?

Also, how much of an impact does 3G have on battery life?

    Thanks

searching for a better signal mows down a battery with ease. You can use switch pro (app in the market) which allows you to toggle 3g on/off (many other things as well) at the push of a button.

As long as you have a solid 3g connection you will likely have no signicant battery drain due to 3g use. As suggested above.. when you are in a dead zone the phone will kill your battery with it's desire to refresh without a connection. Placing the phone in airplane mode during known dead zone areas will avoid this drain. A third party app as suggested above is another option.

u can also turn off 3g by holding down the power button and tapping mobile network to off in the menu that appears, so you can still get calls. Airplane mode won't let you get calls.
