    No doubt whatsoever.
Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.
The most intense amazing performance I have ever witnessed. I never knew he was capable of that. He is sadly missed.

Off the top of my head:

    Robert DeNiro - "Raging Bull"
Jack Nicholson - "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"
Anthony Hopkins - "Silence of the Lambs"

RDJ as Chaplin was pretty spiffing.

Honestly though its too hard to say. Heath was good as Joker. he was also great as Skip in Lords of Dogtown.

    Al Pacino - Carlito's way
Morgan Freeman / Tim Robbins - Shawshank Redemption
Kevin Spacey - Life of David Gale / American Beauty
Adam Sandler - Reign Over me
Roberto Benigni - Life is Beautiful
    Yolande Moreau - Seraphine
Alan Rickman - Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves

    If we threw in TV...

    James Gandolfini - Sopranos
    John Hamm - Madmen
    Michael C Hall - Dexter
    Hugh Laurie - House
Edward James Olmos / Mary McDonnell - Battlestar galactica

I would have said Chaplin, but Less Than Zero is a close second, especially considering his life followed a similar path.

Just to name one, Naomi Watts in Mulholland Dr. The scene where she is an actress auditioning for a part and she just transforms into another character before your eyes and you just believe it. Should be a clinic for acting students.
