    Guys, (and girls)

I'm attempting to use Sipdroid + Google voice + Gizmo5 on my Droid to make free VoIP calls. I was able to connect Sipdroid and Gizmo5 (green light in status bar), but when I attempted to verify my phone (Gizmo5 number) with Google voice, I cannot receive the verification call from Google (Sipdroid says incompatible codecs). I've searched and played around with the codec settings in Sipdroid...nothing. Any insight?

    Thanks!

Edit: I'm using a Droid with Bugless Beast 0.4. I did uninstall the official voice app...

Quite probably because very very few people are actually attempting what you are doing, so yo are basically in a very small minority.

What you are trying to do, however, intrigues me - Spring Break comes for me in 8 days, so I am gonna subscribe to this thread in the hopes that you either figure it out or that I have time to collaborate with your troubleshooting this issue.

However, if it says incompatible codec, IIRC Voice uses something not very popular / widespread, right?

From the searching I've done, I've found at least moderate interest in the sipdroid/voice/gizmo combo. There are numerous successful accounts of using this combination on Droid, Nexus One etc...people are definitely doing this successfully. However, I can't find any evidence of anyone else running into the codec incompatibility problem I am having.

I am not sure which codec Voice uses, but by the looks of it Sipdroid can use speex, alaw and ulaw. I'm guessing that Voice does not use any of these...

But if others can get it working then so should you be able to - so they're either leaving out a step, or else....something weird is going on on your phone.

Could it have to do with the call quality optimizations that were being talked about here to allow for better quality calls? Have yo done said optimization, and if so, care to remove it? If you haven't done it care to try it?

I haven't tried it, and will try it in a few moments. But there is proof of this method working with the Droid in airplane mode and only WiFi active...would the call optimization thing even effect this?

I'm thinking it's something weird going on with my phone. If this was a known issue it would surely be documented somewhere...

It shouldn't - that is why I didn't mention it at first - VoIP has nothing to do with normal calls.

However, normal calls *do* use a codec or two, and I wonder if changing those settings may, in the BG, activate a codec that is sitting there doing nothing, which may then help you out with your issues as well....

I'm downloading the Gizmo5 application for Mac and will attempt to have Google call that for verification...I'll report back in a few moments...

No luck...I can get Google voice to ring my phone via the SIP number but the call is still immediately dropped and the incompatible codec message is displayed..

weird. Could it be that some *other* app has played with / messed with the codecs?

Also, could it be that it is BB 0.4 (since that is based on a yet unreleased unofficial 2.1 ROM)?

I'd say it could be BB...I don't have a ton of data on my droid, maybe I'll try going back to my stock backup with nandroid and see if this will work there. The only apps I have that I think would mess with codecs are official Google Voice and unofficial GV....I don't see any codec settings in either and deleting both of them has not had any effect....

Those should not have any affect -but games, or other things that make use of the sound system, may, in fact, be installing their own codecs, so be careful.

But I'd look at the BB first.

Thanks for the help so far. I don't have any games, but I do have pandora and a few other apps that do use the sound system. I'm going to try to make this work on the stock 2.0.1 now (after doing a Ti backup). I'll report back in a few when I'm done.

    Without restoring apps?

Yes, without restoring apps - fresh install of Sipdroid...same error. I'd say that's enough to rule out BB as the culprit, right?

I haven't been able to find anyone saying they have this working within the last few months. Perhaps it's a Sipdroid update that broke compatibility with Google voice?

    yup - definitely not BB.

Not sure where to go from here, other than trying another DROID....

Of course, your supposition may also be true - I had assumed you saw people who were using it *now*

Not now, but within 4 months...I'm going to root around for an older version of Sipdroid and see if that'll work. One of the Market reviewers stated that app gets worse with every update...:p

Edit: I also tried GUAVA.apk and that turned out to be Sipdroid in disguise, and would not run on my Droid.

Ummm, DROID is barely 4 months old lol....

So, yeah, something could easily have changed - as in the 2.0.1 update....among other things....

Lol true. There has to be a way to make free VoIP calls with this phone.

Actually, VZW just announced a partnership with Skype, in that they are going to start allowing Skype calls over the network - or so I read somewhere....

So, it might be just a matter of waiting for a spell.

I'll have to look into that...anyway thanks for your help with this, in the event that I figure it out I'll post something so others who run into this can make it work out.

Please do - like I said, I have this thread subscribed - I am *very* interested in this feature, even if it comes from VZW using Skype - I am about to graduate college, and then very possibly move to another state for grad school - being able to make VoIP calls via my DROID means I can quite possibly avoid roaming charges while out of state without having to change my plan to another locale....

So, this is of great importance to me as well.
