Skype mobile for Verizon was launched this morning in the Android Market. Those with existing Skype accounts will have no problems setting up. People who dont have a Skype account can either set one up with the mobile app or set one up using the desktop software. I've been using it for a few hours now and I like it. It gives me my buddy list so that I can talk to all of my Skype friends, it allows me to use Skype to speak to other Skype users all over the country for free and even those without Skype numbers at a discounted rate. I have Skype with call out unlimited on my netbook for home and travel, I just use my netbook to make calls from my home. I think its a great application, anyone else whos using it now I'm interested in seeing what you think. Those that want more information or want the Market download link sent to you visit

For some reason, I get an error saying that the application is not available for my phone. This is on a Droid Eris, not rooted, stock firm/software.

Edit: Though since you can't use Skype over WiFi with VZW, it doesn't really matter (to me at least).

why would you want to use a wifi connection ?? the verizon skype uses the verizon voice network, this guarantees better voice quality... This is also free of any data bandwith and voice charges by verizon..

why wifi? Thats an obvious answer because you can get more bandwidth in areas were you dont get good verizon coverage. Some people have blackholes in their homes or on the road (country side), but have wifi access.

If you can use wifi, you dont get charged for the minutes usage based on your plan. It's only free skype to skype, not skype to land lines or mobile.

Also, it sucks that you HAVE to disable wifi to use skype. They should have just blocked the app from touching wifi. For those users that dont want an unlimited plan wifi usage is essential.

Because if I travel internationally (where there's CDMA service, that is), I'd get nailed for data roaming or have to pay for a temporary international data plan. That doesn't happen on WiFi.

    This, too.

If you can use WIFI then you've probably been using a laptop for Skype prior to today so use that. This wasn't really meant as an application to introduce people to skype, it was an intermediary to use Skype with your Verizon device. I still use my computer at home. The phone doesnt do video chats either so I still need my computer.

The skype app for verizon NEVER uses your minutes or data.. if you have to connect to a land line you need credit in your skype account to terminate outside of skype, wifi is not going to help you here.. This is no different than using it from a computer.. the convenience here is that it allows you access without a computer..

if you have "holes" in you home why not get a cell repeater so that you cell works all the time.. I know if I had that problem I would have done it..
if you want to do video you have to use your computer anyway.. it was never meant as a substitute for the normal skype application just a convenience adder..

The Skype mobile app has some glaring weaknesses:

    1. No Wi-Fi support is one thing, but no Wi-Fi at all while using the app is running is ridiculous.
    2. Forcing outgoing calls to circuit voice is slow and cumbersome, and when you end a call, you are in your call log, not back in the Skype app.
    3. Incoming calls indicate "Skype call", with absolutely no indication of who the actual caller is.

This is another case of the walled garden mentality completely trumping the minimum requirements that drive a compelling user experience.

How do you make skype exclusive to verizon and leave out a feature you have given to iphones? WIFI is very important. Theres no reason to use skype inside the USA. Most people buy a skype number and unlimited calling within the usa both cost 60 bucks a year total. You can be in costa rica on wifi and call any number in the usa for free with this setup. Same thing goes for receiving calls on your skype number. But this app is totally useless in those situations. And you know what? if you try calling your skype number that you paid 30 bucks for, the app doesnt even ring. What a piece of total junk it is. Even the iphone app will ring. This verizon exclusive is a joke
