    Hey guys,

Long time reader just decided to make a post. I've had the Eris for almost a month now. I absolutely LOVE it (first smartphone). What I can't stand is the SLOW dialer. It is so slow trying to recieve a call it will lag for so long I will actually miss 7 out of 10 phone calls.... When trying to make a call it will take almost a minute to register who I touched to call, and sometimes I'll hit it twice thinking it didn't register then all of the sudden it will work, then a minute later dial that same person and have two lines going....

This is very slow and annoying that such an amazing phone, the phone part doesn't work. I had 1.5 it was slow but not terrible, then 2.1a was a bit better, now 2.1b it's almost unusable. EVERYTHING else works amazing. I have tried to clear ALL texts, dials, tried dialer one, tried using another home alternative but I love sense too much and it didn't make much of a difference.

I have about 20 megabytes of internal memory left, would that be the problem? I don't think so though because even after a fresh install with nothing installed yet, it was still terribly slow. I have sent off my rebate already so there is no chance of returning this for the M Droid right?

I really appreciate any help and sorry for the long post.

This has been posted numerous times and will help you.

    1. dial ##PST (##778) [password is 6 zeroes: 000000]
    2. choose "Edit Mode"
    3. choose "Modem Settings"
    4. choose "Slot Cycle Index"
    5. select 1 (it is 2 by default). That should give you a nice balance between ringing and battery life.
    6. hit OK.
    7. hit Menu and then "Commit Modifications"

Now your phone should start ringing sooner!

Clearing the call log generally helps. Open the Call History app, then menu > delete all.
I've put a shortcut to that app on my home screen, when the dialer starts to slow down I just clear the log. Others have said that using an app that limits the size of the call log will do the trick also. I THINK the name of one of those apps is something like Not Call Log. I know there is more than one app to choose from, but I don't use them - I just clear my log every now and then.

Go to Settings and in either Sounds or Keyboard (I forget which one) you should be able to turn off the audible selection of the dialer. Also, the vibrate upon touch of the dialer should speed it up a ton.

In my experience, having the slot cycle at "0" isn't bad either. It's the fastest setting for me and there is no difference in battery drain. If 1 works for you, fine, but 0 isn't bad either. Or, it shouldn't be.

Here's the explanation for the slot cycle seconds.

2 - Page tower every 5.12 seconds for new call/text/vm/etc,
    1 - Page every 2.56
    0 - Page every 1.28

1 is the best balance between a faster ring and the battery life.

Also, call *228 to update roaming capabilities.

One last thing, having 20MB left will affect the overall speed and responsiveness of the Eris. I would suggest that you try to keep your remaining memory at around 75MB. I'm sure there are a lot of installed programs that you don't need or use.

We were discussing this in another thread yesterday. I too am looking to turn off haptic feedback for the dialer. It seems no one can find it. I have haptic feedback unchecked in the settings for everything else and the tones off.

If anyone knows a trick, please enlighten us.

If you turn off keyboard vibrate under language and keyboard settings it will no longer vibrate when dialing numbers. This has sped up my Eris considerably.

This doesn't work for me. I am running 2.1, so maybe this is a flaw?

i am quite sure this is a result of the sense (htc) dialer. sense (or touchflo 2 and 3d) were slow as crap on winmo and resulted in the dialer and the system responding slower.
im living with it...but i dont like it!
i know one thing, i use advanced task manager, i set up a quick kill icon on my home page. now, before i dial i just hit that and my system runs smoother (dialer included). so not sure if its a mix between slow sense and the running apps slowing my system down but, it works.

Re rebate: You can send it back, they'll just deduct the rebate. My dialer was slow in 1.5 and is lightning in 2.1. So let me get this straight, you installed 2.1b and the dialer was slow with no apps?? Then you installed megabytes and megabytes of apps and it's still slow? You're kidding, right?

Dialer one from the market gives you the option to turn vibration off.

Dialer one is definetly (at least IMO) much better then the stock dialer, and I really wasn't expierencing much lag with the stock dialer . The window that pops up after you recieve a call from a new number is much better. It's really a must have app IMO especially if you are using Sense

Thanks! Nice find. Is there a way to make this the default?

not for incoming calls, or using the physical call button. I'm running helixlauncher so I have it set to one of my four shortcuts on the bottom row thats available on all screens. You can also set an icon in your status bar if you prefer

edit: also has customizable themes, and you can set a limit on your call log

Cool. Thanks. I just put a shortcut on my home screen. Now I need to change the screen for my incoming calls.

After deleting most apps I rarely use, I am up to 45 megabytes free. I also did the *228 option 1 and 2. I have cleared all cache and data from my apps and have done the (##778) option.

The dialer seems to be a bit more responsive but nothing near "lightning fast" as others have stated with 2.1b.

I did not format my SDcard prior to installing the new leak, could this be an issue?

Any other advice would be great!

    Thanks,
    tree_

Exactly how I have it setup. It took a couple days to get use to not hitting the physical send button

With Dialer One, can you set it to open when you hit the big Phone button (Sense)? Or does it only work with a icon/shortcut? I never use the physical call button so that's not an issue. I always found that the physical button actually took much longer than the soft Phone button... no idea why.

Not sure I haven't used Sense in months. But i would guess no, since you can't set it to automatically open when you hit the physical send buttong either

using sense now, and its a no go. I'm sure something as fundamental as the phone application on a phone cannot be change unless you have root access. Even then, I personally haven't seen it yet.
