Sms counter counting individual message vs # of texters.. Unlocked s5

Help!! I just migrated from blackberry z10 (yes i know im behind!) and im just learning the ropes of android.. BUT one thing is really bothering me... The sms notification/ counter is counting individual messages that come through vs # of texters.. For example ---- If 2 people are texting me, but each person sent 3 messages, the counter shows 6. I dont care about the individual number of messages, id like to see 2 for the number of actual contacts sending me messages. I have an Unlocked s5 on tmobile... Any ideas??
