Root So as of now, is there any real benefit of rooting the X?

I have had both the Motorola Droid, and the Droid Incredible, and chose not to root either. Admittingly, I am new to this. I like the idea of having custom themes and such. But as of now, this is still not possible correct?

yeah, to answer the question in the subject line: to get rid of Blockbuster, CityID, Kindle, and what ever else you didn't want

Correct. Rooting is probably a ways away as developers don't seem to be flocking to the X just yet.

Will removing those excess apps really speed up the phone?

No custom ROM's until the bootloader is cracked.

You should be able to overclock though.

Will I be able to get the 3G Mobile Hotspot for free? I don't want to pay $20 a month for it, when I will realistically only use it 4 days out of the month when I go out of town...

Yes, I saw rooting was done today, that's why I'm asking all of this. If the only benefit at this point is removing unwanted apps, its not worth the risk in my opinion. But if I can access the 3G Mobile Hotspot for free, I'll attempt to root in a heartbeat!

As far as I know, yes. I've been using it today and it's showing up as data used in my verizon according to their website. It is free on Sprint's EVO, so I'm 99% sure it's free for the X too.

I've been tethering since the original Droid got rooted. As long as you don't go nuts with it, you won't be charged additional.

Will root allow OTA? This could be a problem.

Removal of bloatware (blockbuster, city ID, etc.) and the ability to install some very useful root-only apps

With out rooting I hit 1.4gb in a week on mine and I use WIFI at home. Verizon is reporting X users are pulling 5 times the data of any others.

With the X rooted, will we be able to increase the speaker volume, do you think? Can't hear the ringtones in a noisy environment.
