I met with a client today who handles content distribution for major corporations via mobile platforms. Part of his job is to maintain statistics and demographics.

So in the meeting he was discussing a certain marketing campaign and which phones/platforms he was going to target ... and out comes the words " .. because we all know women arent using Androids"

    They aren't??

Both my iPhone and my wifes are sitting on the counter, and we both rock Incredibles! She isnt techy AT ALLLLL but thinks the Incredible is the sexiest phone alive.

But assuming there is ANY truth in his statement ... i wonder why VZW/HTC don't drop some campaigns targeting women?

Well I bought "his and her" Droid 2's a month or so ago, and my wife's loving hers. Although, I must say, part of my reason for buying the same phone for both of us was so that I could figure out one phone for two people, because she probably wouldn't make nearly as much use of it left to her own devices . . .

    Women want BB's
    Men want Android

    Simple as that.

I personally try to stay away from discussions akin to, "Men are from Mars, women are from Venus" but I'd have to say it has to do with marketing.

I don't see much Android advertising that is geared to women. Many of my female friends use Blackberries and most of the Blackberry advertising is more feminine or gender-neutral at least.

    Guys and gals,

I have no problem with this discussion but please keep it on topic and think before you post to avoid offending other members.

Can't speak for "chicks" but this is one woman who switched from BB to Android. I was waiting for the Torch and it was so underwhelming that I jumped ship.

Keep in mind that statistics and marketing are two of the biggest methods of spreading BS. Statistics are only worth what the researcher wants to demonstrate and the methods they use. Marketing only wants to sell and will use whatever method makes it happen. Neither reflects reality.

+1 Totally agree with you there, babe!

If you look at AndroidForums, you'll notice that there are a number of females that rock an Android phone! Though it's not as big of a population as those that use the BB or iPhone, we represent, man!

Maybe it's just that I'm on the Forum a lot, but the ladies I see here, KNOW their little Android! My friends that use BB or iPhone...when I ask them basic information about their phone, like what processor is being used, how much RAM/ROM the phone has, I get blank stares.

I know this doesnt speak for the population but at my university, UCF (one of the largest in the nation, 50,000 students) I always see tons of women in classes using Android phones. The most popular seem to be the G1, Droid, and Droid 2. Either that or they are rocking a Iphone or Blackberry.

My fiance actually started using android before i did haha, I'm actually using her droid 1 and let her take my upgrade and get the droid 2. There are quite a few girls that use droids in my nursing class too. Definitely more than blackberries. out of 100 people in out class i'd say about 5 girls and 5 guys use an android operating system phone in here and those numbers are conservative.

Yup. I only imagine that my wife uses her Droid. I only imagine that her trainer uses an Android device, etc...

Statistics and demographics are quite often incorrectly acquired and very often incorrectly interpreted as well but that should be no surprise to anyone.

    That's creepy. :p

my parents are scared of trying to use my droid haha, but they did just learn to text last year and still don't know how to repull texts back up. I tried to let my mom use it the other day and she couldn't even get the screen to cut on haha.

Not from my observations if we are discussing only smart phones. The vast majority of women In my peer group (the don't-want-to-admit-they-are-rapidly-approaching-geezer-status set) do not own smart phones. Girls that are my son's age don't seem to be that interested in smartphones either ... too gadgety for most of them.

Now, the people I do know with smartphones seems to be evenly split between iPhones and Android based phones. There are a few with Blackberry's by they seem to be primarily work-supplied. The Android phones are newer and the owners seem to be more excited about them. The iPhone users seem to have lost some of their enthusiasm, but this is most probably because Android is newer,at least as the market is concerned.

A little anecdote ... I attended the last weekend of the "Late Renoir" exhibition in Philadelphia over the Labor Day holiday and saw several people using Android phones. There was not a single iPhone sighting. A year ago this was vastly different.

You don't have to be a younger woman to use an Android phone. I've just been biding my time until a certain developer came out with his app on the Droid - and he's about to do so, so I jumped in. Don't have my Captivate yet, but it'll be here tomorrow, and I can't wait. I always love to tinker with new technology and I'm probably old enough to be your mother! :)

I think you hit the nail on the head. When the Droid commercials first came out my wife's reaction..."It's a scary ad campaign focused on men". Aliens land..all creepy like...technology is scary. Space marine walks by dead space marine on his way to stick his hand into a floating rock that turns him into something out of the terminator. This is clearly targeted at men and a younger male demographic at that say 16-35.

When it comes to anything tech related this is usually your early adopter demographic as well. Makes sense to push towards them initially. I know my tech demon started gnawing on me right away...MUST UPGRADE NOW!

But now that Android is poised to take over the smartphone industry it would be wise to have some adds that target and highlight women as well. I think the newest droid X commercial with the expanding Wi-Fi bubble is a good first step.

You guys must live on Venus. Every girl I have seen has either an iPhone or BB, maybe some type of dumb phone. But definitely no android phones. Heck, I haven't met anyone in this city with an android phone, not female, male, young or decrepit.

Sure statistics can lie, but at the same time, we are on an internet forum....

stats don't "lie", rather it's the people who are interpreting data can skew the numbers to look a different way.

2/3rds of my opponents in WordFeud have feminine-gendered user names and/or pictures of women as their avatars (and not in a cheesecake, adolescent male fort of way).

But no, amongst my friends, family and coworkers, I don't know any women with Android phones of any flavor. Tons of iPhones, quite a few feature phones, a few dumb phones, and (at work) more than a handful of BBs. Those last are, without exception, people who had work-issued BBs in the past and have clung to the platform even after my employer value-engineered our cells away a couple of years ago.

If only the girls here in singapore gave android a chance rather than sucking up to iphone just because it has a logo of a half eaten fruit at the back of it...

You don't see 'em doesn't mean they don't exist :p Well Canada is a bit wee (WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE) slow to technology adaption compare to the USA...though we're slowly catching up ;) A lot of the carriers (Bell, Telus, Rogers) are picking up Android phones and making them their feature phones.
