    Just got the phone an want to turn it on. the manual however states to charge fully before you turn it on.

    how long.?

    HTC recommends 8 hours first time.

    Just curious, where did you see 8 hours? It doesn't even take 8 hours for the battery to charge even when fully drained, so that is a bit excessive.

    OP, you are free to turn it on when you wish. Lithium ion batteries have no memory and won't be affected. However, typically you should cycle the battery every once in a while to correctly calibrate the battery meter as it will start to skew as time progresses
