So how will the Moto Defy handle games?Support

I'm buying my girlfriend a phone for her birthday. She's out of contract and I figure picking up the Moto Defy would be a nice gift. She has a Blackberry 8900 that she hates but she loved my G1 and now my Vibrant. Anyway, here are the specs of the phone for those who don't know...

    Android
    2.1
    Processor:
    TI OMAP 3610
    Processor speed:
    800 MHz
    Memory:
    RAM: 512 MB RAM

I know little to nothing about that processor, so I need your help. Are there any other Androids with that processor out there now? She's not a gamer in the sense of 3D shooters but she loves Angry Birds and things like that. Is that a FAIL processor or a decent one? It can't be that bad. My brothers Hero plays Angry Birds (not perfect, but playable) and that phones been out for a bit.

    Thanks!

I am also interested in its gaming performance. From what i heard its CPU is quite powerful, so 2D gaming is not a problem.

When it comes to 3D games - apparently it doesn't have PowerVR graphics processor, but benchmarks says otherwise - i found some benchmarks on german site - and they clearly recognised Defy renderer as PowerVR, and scores were adequate...

So - if anyone have Defy already, could you test it in some 3D games, try some 3D benchmarks and post results here?

For my girlfriend, I think it would be okay because she plays games like Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Doodle Jump, etc.

For the guy above, I'm guessing we would have to try things like Homerun Battle 3D and H.A.W.X If you could try those demos for him, that would be awesome. If not, If I get her the phone before you do (gonna get it for her at beginning of December), I will let you know how it goes.

This is a very good review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npX9bEmxLMM
Somewhere in the middle it shows the reviewer playing a 3d racing game using the accelerometer and it looked like it performed well. This phone is a definite win.

Well I got mine yesterday and I'm impressed. My previous phone is an HTC Desire and so far there's no massive difference. In terms of games I've got Angry Birds and even Dungeon Hunter and Let's Golf by Gameloft. So far no problems at all. They run and look great.

Some of the widgets aren't to HTC Sense standards, but there are plenty on the market to make up the shortfall. Two big improvements are the external speaker, it's much stronger, and 2gb of storage for apps, even without apps to sd, is plenty. Unlike the desire where I was running short even on Froyo with the apps to sd mod.

Actually just thought of a third advantage. Made a call to my friend on speaker phone in the car and my friend said I was much clearer thanks to the noise canceling mic I assume.

When this get's Froyo which Moto have told me it will. It will be truly great. Now it's still a damn good phone. I have no regrets.

good to hear. i ordered mine yesterday but the courier used by t-mobile (UKMail) has sent the package out for delivery but it's a no-show... not even a card... then checked it back into the depot again.

To be fair to t-mobile they are sending out another one to my workplace (don't know why that wasn't an option in the first place!) despite not yet having the first one back - new one should arrive on Monday. Shame, i was hoping to have a new toy for the weekend!

Would anyone upload more videos about 3D games?
On youtube there are many water proof videos, seems boring.

FWIW, "sound" is not an issue on this phone, if that was your concern. I made a test call to the Skype test service, with the phone down on the desk. I was really impressed with the call quality and volume level, but even more so when I realized that I was listening through the earpiece (it defaults to the speaker on my Motorola Q). When I pressed the "speaker" button the volume level went up ten-fold...this with the volume level on half.

I only found a slight level of distortion at max volume, and I can see if they are not the highest quality speakers, but I never felt that I needed to have it at "max" even at a noisy bar last night. Either way, this VoIP engineer was pleasantly surprised, given how light/small it is. Sound quality does fluctuate, though there are different settings, and I'm sure its affected by the "waterproof design".

I don't know if this gives you a better idea on whether this phone is good for games or not, but I play Pocket Legends on the Motorola Defy (http://www.pocketlegends.com/) with no issues what so ever. I used to have an LG Optimus S, which ran PL, but when there were a lot of people in the same spot (it's a MMORPG) the framerate would drop. The Motorola Defy doesn't do that. It remains fluid no matter how many characters on the screen.

To run the game, you must have atleast Android 2.0 and OpenGL1.1. I am not for sure, but I think you need a GPU to run.

Question, I got my GF got the phone yesterday, whenever she plays Angry Birds it reads her bird-slingshot movements as pinch to zoom. Does this happen to you? I'm using the latest one in the marketplace.

No, not that I've seen. I've noticed that the bird has a tendency to sling the wrong way if you scrolled to the edge of the screen. This happened on my LG Optimus as well, however. Do you experience issues with pinch to zoom on the web browser or anything else that supports multi-touch?

Nope, only issue is with this game. :/

It works on her phone now too. I dunno what was up, did they update it?

It may have just needed a reboot.

Also, it seems the phone does in fact have the powerVR 530 chip inside. That explains the good performance in games.

I hope this phone becomes more popular. It's a rugged little powerhouse. It's already been rooted and I have the uk FW on mine now.

I just played castlevania sotn with psx4droid. It was certainly playable but it played slower than full speed. It ddnt nav any issues rendering the scaling effects in the game it just seemed like i was playing about half speed when scrolling.

I tried loading my diablo rom that i had loaded on psx4xbox but it didn't want to run. That's all the roms i had. Curious to see how other psx games play. There is no frame skip on psx4droid life btw.

I'm gonna try that out, I have a bunch of roms.

Cool, nitewalker. Let us know which tions and how they run. Interested in knowing whether or not final fantasy is playable.

Gauntlet legends was being run on a Tmobile G2 in this youtube video I watched yesterday and it runs almost at full speed. If any one has a working gauntlet legends rom, try running that.

I was able to find a working Gauntlet Legends rom and I am happy to say it runs at full speed (as far as I can tell at least). I was completely surprised, after seeing how slow castlevania ran. I thought Gauntlet Legend's 3d graphics would have cripple the frame rate but it plays very well!

The official specs are wrong; I think it has been pretty much confirmed that the DEFY has the OMAP3630 CPU, which contains the PowerVR SGX530 GPU. Proof is here:

    http://modmymobile.com/forums/637-motorola-defy-general/558261-powervr-530-a.html

That explains the good gaming performance and Quadrant benchmarks (outscoring the Samsung Galaxy S):

Feed the DEFY some Frozen Yogurt and it'll be even more of a hotrod. According to one article, the 2.2 update should come out in Q1 2011. Can't wait!
