My local store had their demo, and the guy was nice enough to let me spend about 20 minutes messing around with it just to get a feel for it.

I am definitely going to pick this phone up on Sunday. And I'll even be nice enough to get it from this store and not bestbuy or wherever since this guy gave me a break.

The body is just as described very lightweight, but the backing is very nice and definitely metallic. the 4 buttons were all easy to use and I never accidentally hit them during my trial. The Home button does take you to center home screen.

The touch screen itself was very responsive, it had the setting for the minivibrate when pressed and that was especially nice while typing.

The UI itself was plenty responsive, never stuttered and I was opening and closing stuff left and right. Played videos (h264!) surfed using wifi and just messed around alot.

Typing on the keyboard in landscape was perfect for me. I have fairly large hands and thick fingers and my AT&T Fuze is sometimes hard to use with its smaller raised buttons. I had no issues and barely made mistakes. I even tried the handwriting mode, but I think that would actually go much slower than anything else. I did not try swype. And another confirmation about NO MICROPHONE BUTTON for speech to text...so I dont know what is up with that and it has me worried.

The screen was beautiful...the guy even walked outside with me. Being your typical AT&T store guy he knew everything about the iphone and nothing about this but even he was impressed with how nice the screen looked even outside.

I took some pictures inside the store and outside all were definitely nice looking on the screen, but without being able to load them on a comp at home it's hard to tell how good the quality really is, but I saw no lighting issues even inside the store which was decently, but not crazily lit.

Playing movies and taking movies were as expected as well. very nice quality.

In the end I think we have a winner and I'll be picking mine up on Sunday.

Nice! Lucky you- my store denied me and told me that I'll just have to wait.

    Hello AT&T, hype this phone.

Check out the widgets tour @ AndroidandMe (in the reviews thread). He goes thru getting the usual Android keyboard (+ microphone) up instead of the Samsung or Swype ones. It's there. Don't fret ;)

    Super jealous, btw :p

The typical android keyboard can be found by holding any text input space, clicking the "input method" option when it comes up, then choosing android keyboard. I know theres a video out with someone doing it, I'll find it.

I guess he felt ok with me walking outside with him because my son was still inside, if it was like a few months before release I woulda called it a fair trade...but we only have a few days... :)

the at&t logo.. was it on the plastic or beneath a glass? Does it seem easy to remove?

i actually went into a nearby att store and they had no clue how much or when they'd get it. so consider yourself lucky... i guess i'll try the other one that sells iphones.. but i dunno if i want to even walk in there...

Hm, I wish I had checked that. I did ask about the $350 price and he didn't know. Sorry didnt think about the logo cause it's not really a bother for me.

So everything I said was true! Lol, glad you liked it.

Should of came to our store! We're nice and let people see it!

You can enable the standard keyboard in the settings menu as well. As far as the speech to txt I'll check tomorrow at work.

    I'll look tomorrow at work.

I still can't get 100% confirmation on the retail price, most are saying 350 though but it is in NO documentation I have seen yet.

I have a Wife AND Kids. Does the Captivate come with a Nag and Whine mode, or is that only a feature on Windows Mobile phones?

I saw a review of Touchwiz 3.0 on youtube. You can switch to the standard Android keyboard which has the microphone button. The reviewer even showed it in use.

Yes, looks like we will have the microphone button in some shape or form...but why did samsung leave it off? I know swype has its own thing, but it just seemed wierd..and I sort of liked the samsung keyboard, but I won't be able to use this for that reason...anyway no worries I'll find a nice keyboard to use since I know the functionality is there.

Yea you can use google talk to input data; they don't show it in very many of the reviews (a few for the droid x demonstrate it and it seems fairly accurate).

How sensitive is the touch screen? One of the reasons I've never picked up a non-Apple smart phone is all the touch screens on other phones are very poor (IMO). Is it heat sensitive?

They are all very well made these days. This it going to be my first non iPhone from the past 3 years and when I was looking around (droid, Inc, EVO) all the touch screens are made very well and on point

The touch screen was extremely responsive...coming from my AT&T Fuze it was like 50 million times better...I know thats a not a good comparison so you might want to ask 3gs owners how it compares, but I had no issues whatsoever getting responses to my touch be it swipe drag or tap.

I cannot. I only used the mobile Video app and youtube app. We have a couple AT&T store guys on here though perhaps they can help. Otherwise I'll let you know on Sunday.

I stopped by the local corporate store today and got lucky. They had one in stock for training purposes and got it from the back for me to fondle. It is really a beautiful device - from the minimalist hardware to the sharp looking screen. I couldn't look at it for too long as they didn't want ordinary mortals to see it ahead of time, but the experience re-confirmed my decision to acquire the device. If you're wondering if it was worth the wait the answer, at least for me, is definitely.
