What's the status on this issue?
Many of the Samsung Galaxy S phones come with a beautiful array of soft keys with LEDs that are dieing to be used as notification lights as well.
For example, the T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant has 4 soft keys (menu, home, back, search).

I would like to be able to set the menu key to light up at an interval of 3 seconds within the first hour of receiving a text message and light up at an interval of 5 seconds or more after the first hour of receiving a text message.

Has Samsung released the necessary API? Or does Google have control over this?

So, no one cares about having a notification light? The entire range of SGS phone would become near-perfect if this feature were added in.

there already is an app called noled that does what you want but it doesn't use the softkeys at the bottom but the actual screen itself. Check it out in the market.
