Put mp3 in notifications/ folder in your sd card, then select via SMS app -> settings -> sound

Yes, when the USB storage pops up when it's plugged in, make a notifications folder in that.
I have mine in media\audio\notifications but someone said that notifications\ works just fine.
    Any joy?

Go to where you look at text messages (on mine, I drag the home screen to the right once). View the list of messages.
Press menu, settings, choose "Select sound", and the mp3 you put on your phone should be in the list.

*Note that you must have unplugged your phone from the computer at this stage, otherwise the app won't be able to look at the sd card*

    Thanks Edders.
Another method is using Astro app.
Open you desired music file and press "menu", chose "set as ringtone" then another menu will pop up for your choose on "phone ringtone/contact ringtone/trim the ringtone"
I think "trim the ringtone" is useful as it can cut down the file size and improve the response time for incoming call.
