When using google maps is it possible to save a route to the memory rather than eat into your data allowance ? does it use alot of MB ?

The most data-light way to do this is find your route and directions while still on a wifi connection - google will then cache the route and the directions before you set off (don't exit navigation) then you will be able to do all of the route using next to no data (unless you go off the route, it needs data connection to 're-route' but data use is minimal)
