Help Speaker and mic problems

My daughter has been having issuses with her HTC cha cha the speaker on it sometimes doesn't work (all she hears is like someone talking through water) and at the same time the mic doesn't work(i cant hear anything) if i take the battery out without turning it off then turn it back on it relsolves the problem. Any ideas or others having this problem.
