Stopped by the Sprint store today because I've been having some issues with my phone since the software update. Specifically, I've been losing data connection at random times, screen will turn on and off repeatedly on its own, and phone will not dial out and/or will not hang up a call. I have to either reboot my phone or pull the battery out to fix it and I'm having to do this more and more.

Sprint rep said they'd look at it and see what's going on. An hour later I come back and the answer I get is, "That's a known issue with all Android phones right now, but Android 2.1 is coming out in a month or two and that should fix the problem."

So...you're telling me that I have to deal with this problem for another month or two?? And even then, it's not a for sure date.

I have to say that I am slightly frustrated with that response. Is this a build quality/software issue with Samsung or Google? Has anyone else experienced these issues?

Nor a for sure fix

Check around, read the pinned threads... yeah, lots of people are having those problems... though not so much the screen flashing. Try reflashing CL14 for that.

Yep. We've all experienced issues and they just don't give a shit. That seems to be their general form answer: deal with until the 2.1 update comes and fixes it, but then they refuse to give us a better solid answer when it's going to come out other than "2Q".. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the 1.5 platform does not natively support CDMA and it severely cripples our phones potential and even makes the most essential and basic cell phone features somewhat powerless at times. We're all pissed about it, but theres nothing that can be done other than wait while they make sure this 2.1 update is the real deal and not full of bugs.

Everyone seems to be waiting for 2.1 to fix all of the issues with this phone. I sure hope it does, but I'd bet the farm that after 2.1, a lot of these issues will still exist. I wouldn't be surprised if 2.1 didn't introduce a few more issues of it's own. Like I said, I sure hope that I'm wrong.

Actually Android 2.1 works pretty well. I have an official Sprint build on my Hero. It fixes a lot and adds tons of new functionality. I found a few bugs, but they are so obvious that they should be fixed before the final build. Still things work really well. For Moment users, it should fix a lot, seeing that it natively supports CDMA. I think most of the Moment issues, like the ones described above are due to crappy porting by Samsung, so hopefully they got all their drivers worked out.

Nothing immediate to do, but I have noticed since buying this phone that Samsung makes a lot of product lines relating to computers, televisions, washers/dryers, personal electronics, and phones. All things which I will not be buying.

Just my way of saying "thank you" to a company that has shown me their appreciation for buying a $400 phone from them.

Sprint's on thin ice themselves, but remain the cheapest plans in town.

Shouldn't have bought a CDMA device that was released on 1.5.... this is a known issue with 1.5 and one of the problems of being an early cdma android adopter....
The only cdma phone that doesn't have any of these issues is the droid, and that is because of unfair business practices between google and motorola specifically.... Even the hero and droid eris have their own cdma quirks and issues..

After updating to cl14 at the Sprint store, my phone's screen was turning on and off repeatedly too, but that only lasted for an hour or so and hasn't done it since. Seems everything is working ok too. I set up tethering yesterday, and that seemed to work well. I'll find out next week when I'm traveling and need to use it for sure.

Update: It started doing it again this morning. Seems Advanced Task Killer is the culprit. Uninstalled- no further problems.

seems like atk is looking like it causes more problems than it fixes...i noticed the screen flashing as atk would reset the device radio...i just figured it was part of the process being a noob. I soon learned that the time it takes to flash the display actually decreases the life expectancy of the battery by a greater degree. I stopped using atk and have switched to taskpanel and havent looked back.

I'm all for calling caveat emptor when people buy things that are known to have problems, but I did research on the Moment before it came out, and the only glaring downside mentioned was that Android 1.5 was "vanilla." However, being that the Moment is a smart phone and Android is one of Google's pet projects that they update often, I didn't return my phone when these issues first arose because I thought surely they'd be fixed promptly... even if Sprint/Samsung's idea of prompt was a little longer than mine.

Bottom line, the casual consumer had no way of knowing about the 1.5/cdma problem, but Samsung should have never committed to making a cdma smartphone running android without a) using 1.6 or better, or b) making damn sure they properly patched 1.5.

Always make ATK kill itself when it kills rogue apps, or you might as well not use it at all.

Agreed. That being said, I don't mind 1.5 being "vanilla" because I can still customize my phone using applications such as Open Home. However, it is disappointing to release a phone knowing that it is not fully functional.

I would have gotten the Hero except I wanted a physical keyboard. Looking over at the Hero forum, they do not seem to have as many issues as us Moment users are having. This makes sense as HTC is a mobile device centered company and are more focused on developing and supporting their products. In hindsight, I should have sacrificed the physical keyboard and gone with HTC for their product support.

Has nothing to do with what HTC is... Samsung has been in teh mobile business a lot longer then HTC.. but htc invested from the beginning (creating some of the first android devices) so they know the OS better and integrated CDMA into 1.5 better then samsung did... With 2.1 there is no skillset necessary for cdma integration because it is native, then the only htc vs samsung thing "should" be is senseui vs touchwiz...

In using this phone I have found the physical keyboard isn't as vital as I originally thought, but I'm still glad its there. However, since many of the newest phones coming along have much bigger screens than the Moment, I think the touch keyboard idea will start to work out better, and a phys keyboard won't be such a make or break feature.

I too have been back to the store 3 times. Same issues you're seeing here. 1st time they swapped the phonem 2nd time the first told me I had the latest software. Had to go to another store to have the software uploaded. Same problems. Took it back again now I won't get it back until around apr 27. Sure glad I kept my BB 8330 for a backup phone. Yikes.

    Bullshit..
    a) ok.. the moment would have taken 2-3 months longer to release...
    b) Can you make phone calls from teh phone? Can you send text messages? Can you surf the web? Cdma works fine and was patched fine... Only real problems are when people tether which is something the phone was NEVER DESIGNED to do...

I've noticed with CL14 that if I browse YouTube the moment I go back to my desktop the uplink arrow is constantly lit and I can neither make/receive phone calls or do anything else data wise unless I reboot my phone.

Pandora won't make it through six consecutive songs before the radio shuts itself off. At that point the connection is totally hosed (browser, market, SMS) rebooting the phone is the only fix.

    This happens all the time.

I have three or four days to return the phone if I want to.

I'm seriously considering returning the phone. I don't see threads with people complaining about the Hero's radio just shutting off randomly.

double check to make sure nothing is pulling data in teh background during browsing...android isn't good at multitasking multiple data streams at the same time (happens when you download from market place and try to browse.. usually marketplace will pause until you pause browsing)

With the native CDMA support, I'd like to see the phone do a bit better in 2.1 and not constantly downshift into 1x mode. That's my single greatest gripe with the phone.

If that's even the cause. I'm not exactly sure, as I've been trying out a Hero for the last week, and I don't think I've seen it leave 'Ev' once. And it's 1.5 as well. Unless HTC tweaked something to make it work better.
