now after seeing both the blue harvest and the empire strikes back family guy episodes my GF has now decided that she would like to watch the star wars films, so problem is which ones do i start her on, do i start with episode 1 or do i do it in production order i.e new hope, then empire strikes back, return of the jedi then back to episode 1 ,

i was going to do it production order but have had other people say i should do it in the order of the story, but i get the feeling by the time it gets to new hope she will be bored out of her mind, suggestions people

Production order. Start with the good ones, and then show her the "also, these are star wars movies too...even if they aren't that good."

Production order. It is the only way to watch them.

When it comes right down to it, you have to ask yourself a couple of questions.

#1 - What order did you originally watch them in?

#2 - Do you think she would actually keep watching after seeing Phantom Menace first?

#3 - Why the hell are you dating someone that has never seen Star Wars?

I completely take #3 back and apologize if she has been in a coma since 1975.

Has to be production order and truthfully if it wasn't for Liam Neeson in the Phantom Menace and Samuel L Jackson in the other two, I would write off the prequels completely. (Oh and Natalie Portman of course. Phwoar :D)

Fact is that Alec Guiness is a fantastic Obi-Wan, Ewan McGregor wasn't as that Scot plum is not only bad at acting full stop but the guy can't do an English accent for toffee. He even goes to the stupid extremes of being overly posh like American actors do when trying to be English. (Because for some weird reason Americans think we only do two accents the Royal Families and Cockney [IMG])

That and Hayden whatshisface is another wooden, uncharasmatic, unemotional bore to watch to boot who seriously disappointed as Anakin.

well firstly of the damned she hasn’t seen pretty much every classic film you could think of ever but I let her off cos she is cute , we have a film list literally with hundreds of titles on it from every genre possible, she only watched waynes world the other week, she had a very sheltered childhood, well I have decided to do it in production order just so she wouldn’t be bored, think I’m just going to show the original 3 and leave it at that don`t want to spoil the image of star wars in her eyes, made that mistake with Indiana DAMN YOU LUCUS!!!!

I agree with viewing them in production order, especially since the family guy versions are based on them in production order, so she can actually relate to them better. The prequels are crap by comparison too.

Oh, and if you insist on shouting his name, spell it correctly. :)

best thing you can do is, first show her new hope, empire strikes and return and then don't show her the rest

Production order is a must. If you start with Episode 1 she probably wont want to watch any more of them.

You are lucky your girlfriend actually wants to watch them. I have been trying to get my wife to watch them for 3 years but so far she has only made it through New Hope. She falls asleep during them every time I try to make her watch. In her defense she even falls asleep during movies she wants to watch.

I was thinking about this last night... and here's something that seemed important to me.

If she watches them in episode order instead of production order, then there is no way she can ever really fear darth vader the way she should. It's next to impossible to truly respect Darth Vader, after you've seen him be the whiny child that he is all throughout the first three episodes.

So, to truly respect Darth Vader, and understand him as the powerful Sith that he is, you must watch them in Production Order.

Easy solution. Show her the first three in Production order, then get her drunk and when she wakes up tell her she also saw episodes 1-3 and while she said she enjoyed them, she'd probably not watch them a second time.

Why would they be numbered in the way they are if they ain't meant to be watched like that?

Yep.. but that's about it.. I never was to big into star wars but it only makes sense to start with episode 1. I don't care how early the other ones came out.

I'm sure George Lucas wants you to watch them in numerical order, but episodes 4,5, & 6 are GOOD. Episodes 1,2, & 3 are mediocre at best, and really bring down the experience of watching 4,5, & 6.

Preserve the experience of 4,5, & 6 by watching them first, and then, if you still want to, watch 1,2, & 3.

I mean, seriously... it's hard to view Darth Vader as the stone cold murderer he is, when you watch hours of him being a whiny brat.

I have a few friends who never saw them either, so we took a whole weekend and watched them all from 1-6 in that order. A couple of them liked The Phantom Menace the best because Darth Maul is just that badass and another liked Revenge of the Sith the most.

Really most people I know that didn't see the original 3 first like one of the newest 3 the most. I love them all Empire is easily my favorite though

And to any Star Wars fans in Alabama we just got a pretty large Star Wars Exhibit here in Huntsville at the Space and Rocket Center a couple weeks ago. I keep on meaning to check it out but other crap keeps coming up. I might take off work early tomorrow and check it out before going to see the new Predators film

Erm, because episodes 1, 2 and 3 are what happens BEFORE the original films? They are prequels.

Think about it, if George Lucas wanted us to watch the first three episodes first (well, originally a new hope was called episode 3), then he would have made them first! He chose to tell the story in that order in the first place!

Actually the biggest reason he chose to start with Episode 4 A New Hope is because he felt it was the only one that could truly stand on its own. If he would have started with one of the other ones that dont tell a story from beginning to end Star wars would have never taken off the way it did.

I didnt quite word this right saying beginning to end but its the only one of the movies that really doesnt require the other movies. I guess you could say Phantom Menace doesnt require any other movies but who would have gone to see a sequel with a start as bad as Phantom Menace

i don't find that surprising - darth maul was pretty much the only good thing about episode one and it's a darn shame he was killed off rather than carried on the ep2 and maybe even 3
and i'd say ep3 is easily the best of the new ones, granted that's not really saying much

except you shouldn't be comparing the movies, but only the stories, 'cause you know, at the time of deciding neither movie existed obviously
if dick had done phantom menace when he did new hope, maybe it would have been better?

My understanding, from reading interviews with Lucas when Ep 1 was in development, the reason he did Ep 4 first was because the scale of what needed to be done for Ep 1-3 to be good was beyond the abilities of special effects at THAT time.
