So, I downloaded everything and have the file set up per the instructions here. Before getting started i decided to watch the video again. In part two after deleting the PC36IMG.ZIP the instructions say to go to unrEVOked.com and goto the unrEVOked3 selection to download something from there. The message about pulling the one click root is still up and they have a link to unrevoked 2.2 to use in the mean time. I was under the impression that NAND wasnt unlocked until 3.1 or 3.2 or something like that. I dont want to end up with a half root.

Stop, collaborate and listen... unrevoked 3 does not unlock nand, unrevoked forever does. Since you have downgraded, the easiest way to get going is with simpleroot in my opinion, it is now only 1 or 2 clicks and will have you ready to flash custom roms and kernels.

I must of misunderstood the posts i read here when the nand unlock question was asked and they said that 3.2 did unlock it. regardless...

I am interested in simpleroot, in fact it is downloading as i type this. Still looking for directions on it's use.

SimpleRoot – Fully Root Your HTC EVO 4G In One Click, Including Unlocking NAND And Flashing Recovery [Hands-On] | Android News, Reviews, Applications, Games, Phones, Devices, Tips, Mods, Videos, Podcasts - Android Police

instructions should be here. once your phone is connected, all it is is 2 clicks. You must be downgraded from 2.2 to 2.1 or it will not work. Also, if you get errors about versions, you should look at the of the simpleroot box and you will see check for updates, once you check and it updates you should be good to go. I will be here if you need any more help.

Unrevoked 3.2 is supposed to unlock nand.... But it hasn't been released yet.
Simpleroot is really easy to use and is only 2 clicks. 1 for rooting and 1 the custom recovery

    FYI

Unrevoked 3.2 was taken offline because of all bugs, it is a full root, unrevoked 3 is a half root

That's where the confusion was setting in, that and reading a hundred posts debating whether or not it was full or half. I like the simpleroot idea better at the moment though

I would take it a little easy before you jump into flashing roms and kernels. I would start with roms, and find 1 or 2 you like then get into flashing kernels, and before you make any changes do a nand backup so if you dont like the changes or have problems you can restore and you will be good to try again

Key word is at the moment. once unrevoked 3.2 is released that will be the best way to root until simple root comes out for 2.2

I read that most ROMS come with their own kernels, is that the case or did i mis read? The way i understood it was that one would flash a kernel when they were trying to achieve something specific like better battery life and what not?

all roms come with kernels, however there are specific kernels that work with specific roms that are made separately from the rom. these other kernels allow for other modifications, ie. fps, battery, underclock/overclocking etc.

    I
I had actually considered the same thing, the radio and wimax update thing had me questioning it. Though I believe one flashes the radio updates similar to how a rom would be flashed, but I'm a super noob at this and don't know...

That is a good rom to start with, it is stock evo 2.2 rooted. To flash the radios, you can do only one at a time. Put them both on the sd card, and flash 1 then the other. and you can delete anything after you flash it.

So I'm typing my first line in "adb push unrevoked-forever.zip \sdcard\" and it returns an error message saying failed to copy, read only file system.

*EDIT* I just tried on my laptop and received the same message... The full message reads

failed to copy 'unrevoked-forever.zip' to '\sdcard\' : Read-only file system

Then it returns to the C:\android\tools>

make sure your SDcard is not already mounted as a disk drive. change your USB connection to "charge only."

I doubled check this and it was on charge only.

*Sorry for the delay in responding, I was on drill weekend. Still have the same issue though.

In another thread, I saw someone post that if you don't use the right slash, you get the same error. So make sure you're using the slashes correctly. / vs \ etc.

I will go back and double check that, i think i had been following the guide to the letter but sometimes the little things like that can get by.

actually, I just looked at your older posts, and you explicitly state what you tried, and I can see you used backslashes. I then check the procedure you linked to in your OP, and it shows normal slashes.

So.... hopefully using slashes / instead of backslashes \ will fix the problem.
