Help Stop calendar alerts as text messages

So I have set reminders for myself in calendar, but would like to receive those alerts as a notification in the status bar. However I keep getting a text message which never used to happen before. I've played with settings and can't figure out how to stop receiving text messages for my calendared items. I just want to get a calendar icon notification in the status bar. Any help?
