I am working on this device for a friend. It was booting into TWRP but every single option failed. My computer was seeing a mass storage device but would only tell me to "insert disk" when I clicked on it (not recognizing it). I finally installed Kindle Fire Utility Drivers and then ran the Unbrick Utility, which only allowed me to clean cache. After that, my computer finally saw the device and asked me to format it. I did. I had read up on factory reset, so I placed the update.zip onto the device. TWRP allowed me to flash it. NOW, after all of that, it is stuck at the logo, being unrooted, and without having recovery mode. What do I do now?

P.S. My friend would prefer that it is NOT rooted.

try this and tell me what happens.
Plug in USB cable to Kindle Fire on TWRP Recovery mode.
    Bring up Command Prompt.
    Key in adb shell.
Key in idme bootmode 4000 and press enter
    Finally, key in reboot.
    That’s it.
Note – adb.exe is located in Kindle Fire Utility\tools folder or
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools.

When I flashed the update.zip, it removed TWRP recovery as I mentioned above.

alright. so then plug it back into your computer. and bring up command prompt and put in these commands
    fastboot -i 0x1949 oem idme bootmode 4000
    fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot
it should reboot out of fastboot.
off topic but what were you trying to do in the beginning anyways? just install twrp for your friend?

After I typed the first command and press enter, it says "waiting for device."

I am attempting to fix it. It would not boot up at all and still doesn't.

It did once. See this basically snowballed into a heap of crap when I experimenting with a couple different ROMs. I don't know which one it was, but.. now I can't even get ADB devices to show up a device ID.

As for the other problems, I have the same.. The Win USB driver has been installed from the Kindle Unbrick package. I don't see how going to the standard package will do me any better, or if I download the latest Android SDK.

When I boot up into my Recovery 5.0.2.7 I can't even get the USB Storage to mount from the menu. No matter what ROM I manage to get working. They all seem to endlessly loop on the intro screen.

The Kindle shows up in my Devices as a External Storage Device, and it even comes up in my File Finder.. However I am unable to access it.

Should i be looking to Fastboot to fix this problem, or have I officially bricked the first Kindle Fire.
