    Ok,

I still have never been able to root a phone. Maybe it is me but I am starting to lose my mind with this.

I have been trying all evening to figure out why my Telus Hero won't root.

    I followed these instructions to a T:

[GUIDE 16/11/09] Get started rooting Telus HERO130! (No need for QMAT!) - xda-developers

I was able to perform all the steps but when I ran ADB SHELL at the end to check if root was accessed I got $ instead of #!!
    Arggh!

I even tried to install Market enabler to double check to see if root was active but it denied me access, confirming non-root status.

I could used some help here. I don't have enough experience with rooting and android to solve this myself.

    Big thanks in advance!

Ok in case anyone else uses the guide on xda (listed above) I just found out you HAVE to install a custom ROM in order to have root. Would have been nice to have had that mentioned in the instructions.
