How do i turn my evo into a wireless modem?

i go to the settings turn on mobile hotspot and than it sais my spint user name and password is wrong?

is this something i have to pay for or can i root it for free?

i dont want to root it but all i basically want in a root is faster snapdragon and free mobile hotspot
