Swapping SD cards and contentSupport

OK, dumb question coming from me, who has built and maintained computers since the early '80s, but I'm not quite sure about file structure and access from Android.

I've heard different advice regarding swapping SD cards. I have a 16gb Class 10 that will go into the Evo 3D. The only thing I want from the old card is music, but...

For games like Angry Birds, Peggle, etc. is the level stored within data on the SD card, meaning that transferring this information over puts me in at the same level I'm playing on the 4G?

Is user authentication (non-browser) from apps stored on SD card, so that copying these folders over prevents me from having to remember? Most of my userid & PW is in lastpass, but there are a few silly apps that I will likely not remember.

I've heard its best not to copy, there is lots of old app information that should probably be purged from SD card. At the same time, the more popular advice is to just copy over everything from old card to new. Then there's an additional twist, that there are some freebies on the new phone's card.

Thanks in advance for your advice, polite ribbing, old age jokes, etc.

It depends on the game, really. Sometimes save progress is on the SD card, sometimes it's built into the app. I'm not sure about Angry Birds, but Peggle should be able to be copied. Just move the games to SD card and find where they are on the SD card and try a straight copy of those folders.

Has anyone figured out how to copy over the Green Hornet movie so it will work? I copied everything on the 8 GB card that came with the phone to my 32 GB Class 10 Card, but while the move shows up, it will not play.

    Thanks... C

Just copy and paste, the issue with the movie not playing was on htc's side. My copy started playing this morning after not working at all previously and every thing was copy and pasted to my 16gb class 6.

Hey got a question that I cant wrap my brain around.

If I plan on using the new SD card in the 3D tomorrow(Heard they are faster), but I back all my stuff on my SD card now to my computer...what about the apps that have data on the SD card?

What I mean is, if I copy all that stuff, and tomorrow when I get the 3D and fire up app brain to restore apps...they are obviously not going to go straight to the SD card like before correct?

So what happens when I push to have some storage sent to the SD card, will it overwrite what I already have backed up?

    Hope that makes sense....

I'm deciding this as well. Most likely I'm going to go with only copying the stuff I know I want. And then for app data, I'll deal with either losing my settings, or if it's important, I'll try to copy over the relevant data...

My sdcard is a mess of stuff. lots of apps I no longer have left junk in there. So I don't mind starting from scratch somewhat.

I suggest just copying your Pictures and Music over. Don't move over the app stuff. I have done that before and when you install all your apps from the market or AppBrain and then try and move them to the SD card you get an error the first time. When you press move to SD again it works but it takes two presses therefore it takes longer.

First I plugged in my 3D and copy the entire contents of the SD Card to my laptop in a folder called 3D. Then I plugged in my OG and cut everything off of my 32gb card and put it on my PC in a folder called EVO Backup and then copied the entire contents of the 3D card. Then I just kind of went through my EVO Backup and copied the pictures and music and downloads and a few other things but left the Apps stuff alone because that can turn into a headache.

So pretty much be losing all data and settings that are on those apps?

Not that I care too much about the apps. Obviously my Music and Pics are important...and I'll copy backup files for Texts and Call logs(Need that from work). Everything else is really nonimportant.

Speaking of the Texts and Call logs, has any one ever notice an issue when copying those two onto a new Android phone? And not like Evo to Evo, Ive done that before.

I mean like the Evo to the 3D or any other android phone?

once the Evo 3D is rooted, you can restore app settings. And I'm starting to realize how great root is now that I don't have it.

But rather than wait for a root exploit, I'm just going to suck it up and manually configure all my apps.

And agreed that the desktop serves as a good temp folder for transferring SD card data :)

Do I need to format the neg 16Gb card in the phone before I copy to it?

Can anyone tell me what I'd be losing if I just put in a new SD card to replace the one it comes with?

I'm only going to miss root, for the Wireless tether app....it has been clutch having that for work and being able to get on my laptop at ANY time.

Unless the 3D has the Native app(Nonroot) that is in Gingerbread?

you may lose some app settings (for apps that use the sdcard to store settings). you'd obviously lose anything you put on it.

other than that, putting in an empty SD card is a pretty harmless process. your phone won't complain.

I think you would only use The Green Hornet movie stuff.

Having built Windows machines since version 1.0 I'm accustomed to rebuilding from scratch. Yeah, it took awhile to get to this point in Plants vs. Zombies but I'm stuck at this level anyway (freakin' bungee-zombies), so who cares. Based on the advice from folks responding I will just copy over my music and take a productivity hit by doing the rest from scratch. I think I will be happier in the long term.

    Thanks much.

Does anyone know where I can get the Green Hornet movie that came preloaded on the SD card. I switched out the standard 8 gig SD card with my 16 gig I had in my OG Evo. But now I'm not sure where I can put the 8 gig card. Any solutions?

Same problem here. Let's take it a step further and say I formatted the 8gig card because I assumed you could either re-download the movie or that it would be streaming. I never dealt with HTC Watch before and assumed the movie would be accessible over and over again from my account.

Would it work to backup old SD card onto computer, then install your apps on the new phone, then move the app data folders/files over 1 by 1 overwriting the "new" files?

There are a few apps for which I really don't wanna have to restore all my settings manually.

no thats not recommended to do. if you are changing from different handsets you can transfer problems over.. best to do a fresh manual install...

Sorry if this question has already been asked. But I have an app on my 4G that I would like to put on my 3VO. For all of my other apps, I re-downloaded them from the Market. However, I can't find this app on the market anymore (tried the app share feature and the link didn't work). So is there a way to find it on my phone and copy it over to the 3VO? Even though the app doesn't appear to be on the market anymore, it still works fine on my 4G.

I know for a fact that the SystemPanel app: https://market.android.com/details?id=nextapp.systempanel.r1&hl=en

can do this (it has an app installer/archive function and basically produces an *.apk that can be transferred to your other device), and I believe Resco File Explorer has a similar app backup function but I can't be sure of this.

If you want to also save the app data (like high scores or save games) and they are within the app, you'll have to have your 4G rooted and wait for a permanent root solution for the Evo 3D and then use something like Titanium backup.
