Update: According to posters below it doesn't work on their fascinate.

You can control the screen brightness, by swiping right or left, up where the notification bar is.

if it doesn't work, try turning off power saving mode.
settings>sound and display>power saving mode uncheck

    Hopefully this works.

Yes, this works with the Vibrant but NOT with the Fascinate, "SamsungVibrant."

It doesn't just work on the Vibrant, it also works on the Captivate, the Epic, and the Galaxy S released over seas.

Strange it wouldn't work on fascinate. I'm going to try this again tomorrow on a fascinate and double check.

If it wasn't for good reception and good customer service I would hate verizon for what they actually do to their devices.

Holy crap, I would love this functionality. There's gotta be an app for that? No?
Quick, somebody create this or beg a few devs to do it.

well, before I take that step I'm going to "look into it". My foot is in the air... it really is. I'm standing on one foot.

I for one, am so glad they got rid of that. I had a Vibrant for a while and hated the feature. Since it only works with auto-brightness disabled (i usually max out the brightness on the device), I found myself changing the brightness all the time by accident when I pulled down the notification bar. It was more annoying than helpful.

funny, i was just trying this on my fascinate and then i found this thread. it indeed does NOT work on the fascinate but does on my vibrant.....why do carriers remove 'useful' features? they also took out the samsung keyboard that is present on the vibrant ....reminds me of the Nokia e71x on AT&T, they removed smart dialing from that phone....wtf?.......why on earth do the carriers do these things? i can understand NOT adding things but i don't understand removing things?!?!?!?!

    Welcome to Verizon
I know they all do it but Verizon's reputation is the worst. I mean take the internal storage on the Galaxy 2, should be 8gb, we get 2gb. There's countless other examples of both hardware and software crippling.

indeed, they also removed the ability to change system fonts, which you can do on the vibrant.

I find that it works but not so easily on my Vibrant; one must drag across the top, being careful not to go down much because then the desktop changes below, or the notification window drops down. And one must press fairly firmly, and drag slowly, to get a smooth increase dragging to the right, or decrease going back to the left. It is useful, however. Why are these things not well documented in the User Guides?

This does seems to work on my fascinate. Knivez hit the nail on the head. You need to have auto-brightness disabled in order for it to work. I've had auto-brightness off in attempts at saving battery but was always wondering why my brightness would randomly change after making a phone call.

I just verified that it DOES work on a Fascinate. I have Froyo now, have no idea about 2.1.1

But, I have been plagued ever since I got this phone with the screen brightness changing for "no apparent reason".

    Now, I know why....

    Thanks for the tip.

This does work. I found that I have to do a long press on the notification bar then swiping left or right while still holding from the long press makes it work.

EDIT: Sorry for bumping an old thread, didn't realize the dates before I posted. But for those still confused nevertheless:

It does work on the Fascinate. I think the detail you guys are missing is you have to LONG PRESS on the the notification bar first before making any swiping movements. I use this feature all the time when I walk outside and it is sunny.

When you first hit the notification bar, the notification panel thingy (I forget what it's called) will start to come out and expect you to scroll down, right? But instead, hold it, and once you have activated the brightness settings, that piece of the notification window will disappear.
