OK, I'm probably just blind, but where is Google Turn by Turn please. I'm on T-Mobile UK with the Desire, and I can see the Maps feature, but how do I get to Turn by Turn navigation please? Is it on here? Downloaded and tried the AndNav2 app but it can never find a route (Not once). If I have got any kind of sat nav equivalent on here, I would love to know where. If anyone has it on T-Mob UK and can show me, i would be very grateful, thanks.

Thanks Karolis - much appreciated. I assume from what I read on that link that I can install on this on my phone without rooting it. I'll give it a go, thanks again.

You're right - there's no rooting or any other hacking involved. It installs right next to official Google Maps.

They should just release it within the UK.

No argument from me on that.
OK, last question I promise :)

Having download an xxx.apk file, what do I actually do with it? Do I use the pc to pop it into a folder on my phone (I'm assuming so), but if so which one please? And what do i do then (If anything), or will it then just appear. Just a tad paranoid about my 48 hr old phone here.

Cheers guys, much appreciated again. Ken.

You can put it anywhere in your phone (sdcard). Then once you have done that then download an app called Astro from the market.

Open astro, find the .apk file and click on it. Then select package installer from the menu and it will then install like any other app.

LOL - OK so I thought it would be the last question....

Just hooked the phone up to my pc (Laptop with XP), and instantly recognised as HTC Android Phone - Said installed successfully and was now ready to use. I navigate to the removable Disk (F) that appears in Windows Explorer, but when I click on it, it says "Please insert a disk into drive F". I know it has a 4 GB SD card in there, and can see it in the "Settings" section of my phone under "SD & Phone storage", but I can't seem to access it. There is an option to unmount the SD card for removal, which I guess I could do, drop it into a card reader and do it that way, but that seems a tad long winded to me.

Am I missing anything obvious here? Any ideas very welcome. Ken.

Also, is it Astro File Manager by metago that you are referring to please?

SORTED :)

My phone was set to connect to PC for "Charge Only". In settings, under "Connect to a PC", you can change the default connection option to appear as a disk drive, or you can have it prompt you each time you connect to a pc. All serene now (Bar the question about Astro that is).

Cheers
Ken...........

OK, so for anyone else in the UK that has just bought the Desire (Or another android phone) and wanted to put Google’s Navigation Turn by Turn feature on it, I have netted out the result of the above posts into a quick walk through. Apologies if it is a bit Noddy, but personally I like walk throughs, and hopefully it helps somebody else like these guys have helped me.

First off, on your PC you have to download the modded map pack from the following web link:

[APPMOD][04.03.10] Brut's Google Maps r6 (int nav, MT on Donut) - xda-developers

It is about 3MB in size, and you just need to download it onto your PC for the moment (As mentioned by others you can download direct to your phone, but in case you don't have access to wifi, and don't want to use up any of your data plan allowance...). Do, though check the Android version requirements on the page that the above is linked to, against what you have running on your phone before you do all this stuff..

Next you need to connect your phone to the PC, and be sure it is recognised as a disk drive, because you are going to use Windows Explorer to copy the file you just downloaded onto the SD card in your phone.

Now, when I first did this I just hooked the phone up to my pc (Laptop with XP), and it was instantly recognised as an HTC Android Phone – It said it had installed successfully and was now ready to use. However, I navigated to the “removable Disk (F)” that appeared in Windows Explorer, but when I clicked on it, it said "Please insert a disk into drive F". If this happens, then the reason is likely to be that your phone is set to connect to PC for "Charge Only". On the Desire, in settings, under "Connect to a PC", you can change the default connection option to appear as a disk drive, or you can have it prompt you each time you connect to a pc. Either change the default to be “Connect as a Disk Drive”, or disconnect it, then reconnect and watch the phone for a set of options to appear – Choose the “Connect as Disk Drive” option.

Assuming your phone is now accessible in Windows Explorer as a disk drive, go look at the folder structure and where you see folders such as mp3, create another folder in the same directory that mp3 appears in, (Called mine “Google TBT Maps” and then paste in the .apk file that you downloaded earlier.

Now disconnect your phone from the PC, else you won’t be able to do the next bit, as you need the PC to let go of the SD Card inside your phone.

Go out to the Android Market and search for “Astro”, and what you actually want is “Astro File Manager” by Metago. Now just install that. Once installed, run it and you will see a Windows Explorer type screen and you should be able to navigate to the folder and file that you just put in there. Click on the file and then select "Open App Manager", and then select Install when prompted.

If your phone is the same as mine, you will now get a warning message that tells you that your phone security settings prevent any app being installed that was not from the Market. You should however also see the option to go to settings, in which case just take it and then untick that security option once you get to the relevant screen.

You will now return to the app you were trying to install, and so again just hit Install and it should now do so.

What will happen is that you will see another identical Maps icon to the one that you already had, but this one will have the word “BRUT” on it in red. Click that to start the maps, and then when it has loaded, simply hit the Menu button and choose “Directions”, and put in your start and finish places and then hit GO. You will now see a list containing:

Start
Finish
Show On Map
NAVIGATE <<<<<<<<<<<<
Directions

If you do this on your phone before installing the modded maps, you will NOT have the NAVIGATE feature.

Click on Navigate and you will now be asked which app you would like to use to do this and you will see both Map icons available – Choose the one with BRUT on it in red. (I ticked the option to make it default for that action).

You’re done!!!

All a bit long winded,

1/ Download and instal any file manager from Market
2/ On your PC/Laptop download the apk file
3/ Conect your phone to pc/laptop as a hard drive and open the drive
4/ Drag and drop apk file to storage card (no need to create a foulder)
5/ Dismount the phone from the computer
6/ Open the file manager you installed and let it find the maps app and click on it to install

Once installed you'll have 2 Maps widgets.
You might also need this:

SpeechSynthesis Data Installer

This can also be found in Market and will also help with text to speech when we can get it

You can download the apk directly from your phone too. Just browse to the site from your phone and download it.

No it won't work offline but i read somewhere that google nav preloads the journey so that you shouldn't have a problem if you go out of signal.

Not tested it yet mind.

Does downloading a route come out of your data bundle? I know you get unlimited internet but on orange unlimited means 500mb, does each route you calculate come out that 500mb?

If so i'll be keeping a look out for tomtom!

I wonder if anyone can help me, I'm having some troubles.

I tried downloading from the first two links on the site and both of them were not available "This file is either removed due to copyright claim or is deleted by the uploader."

So I tried downloading from the last two links and with the first file I cannot install it because when I click on it and open the App manager it only has "Uninstall".
The last file doesn't do anyhting when I open the app manager.

Sorry if that isn't too clear =)
