Help Tablet not connection to TV HDMI

Girlfriend got the RCA home internet stereo that has a cheap tablet with it thats the brains of the unit. It has the mini hdmi connector. It comes with a adaptor to connect it to a regular size hdmi connector. When I connect it to the TV the tablet screen goes crazy, looks scrambled and unresponsive. I have tried different HDMI cables and TV's. Im guessing its the mini adaptor or the tablet itself. What do you all think?
