Help Text Message Notifications Are Now Gone

For some reason, in the last few minutes, ever time I get a text message, I hear the audible alert, but then the text notification disappears??? It used to have a number next to the "Message" icon. It is now gone, for some reason.

Any help why. Its like the notification comes and disappears in a few seconds, before I can even do anything

My phone has started doing this also. From what i can tell, its due to the message app still running in the background, so it thinks you're reading it when you really aren't. To get over this i've just started fully backing out of the app when not using it and the alerts have gone back to normal now ...Unless i forget :<
