texting contact groups

when i press the contacts button, i can pull up my different groups (family, friends, work or google, however, when i go to messaging (texting) and go to groups, i get all of the same groups, but they are empty and i can't find a way to add a contact to any of the groups. i have tried; phone contacts only, google contacts only, sim contacts only and/or every combination i can think of. thanks in advance if you can help.
