I've been lurking the guides on these forums for the last few days. Just wanted to thank this community for helping me go from regretting dumping my blackberry 9700 for this xperia x10, to glad that I have a modern smartphone, that still handles the duties my blackberry did.
I'm on the atnt network, and this x10 was pure garbage out of the box, no doubt due to atnt trying to protect their precious iphone by limiting competitors. The 1.6 OS was laggy, the sony ericsson keyboard was borderline un-usable, the voice typing didn't work, and the default email/txt msg apps were pure crap compared to what the blackberry had.
Being my 1st android phone, and the fact I rely so heavily on my phone for work (thus fear of bricking the thing), I took my time, and researched here, and took on the guides one at a time.
1) the guide for upgrading from 1.6-2.1 was the 1st step, the links had corrupted files, thus wasn't working, and my level of regret was growing. Luckily someone had posted the missing/corrupted files in a post in the same thread. Getting this to finally work took my spare time of 2 days, but really gave me the confidence to continue, and believe this phone could eventually meet all my needs. I have no idea how much this alone increased performance, all I can say is, it is very noticeable.
2) the guide for installing the HTC keyboard was great, this keyboard finally quelled my fear of losing physical blackberry keys. Though, i'm still not typing as fast on this touch screen as i was on my blackberry, the usability of this phone increased exponentially! Now I actually believe in time, I can type as seemlessly on this touch screen as I could w/ physical keys!
3) with the 2 major downfalls of an out of box atnt x10 out of the way, the rest of its downfalls could be fixed by finding the right apps. I replaced the default email/messaging apps with k9 and handacent respectively. With google voicesearch (which is no longer offered for dl by google as far as I can tell, but luckily was available in these forums), and google gesture, its actually possible to operate this phone one handed (something the blackberry excelled at). Also, youmail has restored a feature I really missed from my blackberry, visual voicemail... I can never go back to old fashioned voicemail again!
Again, i want to thank the forums for helping make my transition from blackberry to android a successful one. I had been a blackberry user for four years prior. My first android was clearly inferior to my previous blackberries out of the box, potential not withstanding. Now it can handle everything my bb could, and so much more.
