Quick question: If I'm currently running stock 2.1, do I need to wipe before installing a 2.1-based custom ROM?

This is the correct answer to the OP.

Not wanting to step on your feet, tatonka, but, may I add something? As I learned earlier today.... When restoring from one ROM to a nandroid backup of another ROM, it isn't necessary to wipe.

    good addition.

I didn't think of that because I very rarely restore nandroids. More often than not, if I'm going to switch to a different ROM, even if I've used it before, I'll just set it up all over again and start from scratch. I used to use them a LOT, but lately haven't bothered.

I also have the habit of wiping before switching anything (nandroid or not), due to recent experiences with having little parts of previous ROM's sticking around and causing problems

But is it still ok to wipe before doing a restore?

Is ok to wipe anytime. Just not necessary. (for a restore)

Think of it like this, when you take a dump, you wipe. Everything is clean and good. If you don't wipe, bad stuff can linger around and make trouble.

Sorry to be so crude, but it is an analogy that everyone can understand.;)

i initially wiped when i first rooted and flashed Fresh 1.1, and then again when i flashed Fresh 2.0d, but every since i've flashed 2.1.1, and 2.1.2 without wiping, and everything is good to go. But yea...general rule of thumb, Wipe before you flash a new rom. (unless you're jumping from Fresh to Fresh) in my opinion.

Same here. If you encounter any errors with a new ROM, at least you know it's not because of having remnants of the last ROM on your phone.
