I am torn because tonight I went into BB to look at a Evo to replace my wife's 2 year old and pretty worn out non-smartphone. My wife immediately said she wanted it and left me to play with the demo.

Now I am wondering if I should be keeping my iPad...I want the Evo! But I love the iPad. I have been carrying it everywhere...even into grocery stores and restaurants. Took it to several doctor's offices yesterday...it was awesome. I want to mount it in the car. I am much more likely to go mobile with the wife and sit around and just wait on her. Today I worked out at the gym on a treadmil...and browsed a magazine...will need to go back and read a couple of articles that I could only look at the Picts and large captions while running. Next time I will try an iBook that allows super large text. But time flew by quicker than it ever has and I hate working out at the gym...so this was really cool.

I just want to be more efficient. I want my stuf online like docs and todo items and notes, etc. I am so frustrated with multiple devices and content everywhere.

Is there room for a Evo and an ipad? We would have to pay more except that right now, I am paying for unlimited 3G so if I dropped the iPad 3G, it might be pretty close. I had planned on staying on the $15 plan most of the time...but AT&T pulled the fast one of the century. I currently have a Palm centro with ok tethering through dial up (hey it works when there is no 3G).

If I get the Evo, what would be come of my iPad? I already sold my first week purchase of the wifi. Would I really sell my 3G pad after calling BB 5x per day for 3 weeks? I have used the iPad for 3-6 hours per day for almost 2 months now. But a lot of that time has been here on this forum...and in getting the devices setup...which both have been very time consuming.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

here's an idea, bring a real magazine if that is what you need

i'm sorry but i REALLLY don't get the obsession with the iPad, i mean it's the most awkward half brother between a smartphone and a computer, it just doesn't make sense besides the fact that it is a fad, i'm not trying to hate on apple only, i just don't get tablets, i mean they are touch only, but an awkward screen size where you have to pretend it's a real size qwerty but really it's only 2/3 the size so your hands are scrunched together. look i feel ya, but seriously just get the EVO, it's a phone and you won't get bored of it after a while, i mean if you really need something small and portable get a netbook, they do more stuff than any tablet and have real buttons, just my opinion though, if you realllllllly love your ipad and don't see your self EVER getting bored of it then be my guest to keep it

but for real just drop the ipad and put it towards and evo AND a netbook, you'd be able to get both

EDIT: yes i'm wearing my flame suit so please go at it lol

You can put an EVO in your pocket. You gotta hold the iPad

If you're already with AT&T the unlimeted plan will stay with you. If you can return the ipad for a non 3g one. That's what I would do if I was in that situation. Plus of you root you can use evo wifi for ipad

I had the same dilemma; ended up with both and love it, hard sell for the wife, at least for me as she thinks I am nuts. I have the wifi only version of the iPad, so no the EVO is the out and about.

    Here are my two cents...

First, the iPad is really cool. Yes its bigger then an Evo, yes its limited and locked down more in its operating system then Android, and yes its APPLE. However it is still really awesome to have with you if you want to read a book or browse the net with out having to zoom in close to your phone and pinch and zoom etc. It is cool when you want to share reading, or watching a video with someone else on the go, such as a lady friend :) Chilling in the nice summer sun at the park and watching a movie with your lady friend is quite awesome. And for that matter anywhere with anyone, sharing the entertainment services you get on the iPad with others on the go is a lot nicer and convenient then and Evo. Its light, thin, and better than carrying a notebook computer. Comes in handy when you need to type up documents or letters or any kind of office applications.

Some say its a fad, as covert mentioned above but, a lot of people didn't get the iPhone when it first came out, the iPod, the iMac, and a lot of apples innovative products over the years. It will not be a fad, but the thing that will really drive this device wont be apple it will be Google. Chromium OS on a tablet will be the bee's knees.

And one further comment. With the Evo you can make it a mobile hot spot (e.g. wireless router) so you can actually have both the iPad and Evo, only pay for the sprint data plan for the Evo and use it to connect the iPad to the net and even over 4g speeds...

Yeah I wouldn't get rid of the iPad at all. Just use the Wifi hotspot on the EVO for the iPad.

Are you looking out for your own best interests or the OP? He has already stated that he uses the iPad extensively.

To the OP, the EVO can do alot of similar things an iPad can except a few things. The iPad has a larger screen, so right off the bat anything that uses the large screen (ie Reading ibooks/Magazines) is much better suited for the iPad.

Not sure if you play any games on your iPad, but games on the iPad are much much better than on an Android device.

I'm gonna be 'that guy'. Save up, get the Evo. Stop paying for the 3g on the iPad, pay the $30 for tethering on the Evo, turn on tethering when you want it on your iPad. The bonus for this is that you no longer have limits on the data use. And, you don't have to worry about coverage. ;-)

    This^

I have both, along with a Mac Book Air and an iPod Touch...they all have their niches and functions, BUT the EVO is the only one that's ALWAYS with me now.

I have WIFI iPad and Evo. I use Evo WiFi router capability for internet on iPad and its great. I use both for different things so to me both are complimenting each other its not one vs the other.

    Option A:
If you can afford it, then definitely keep the iPad... like everyone is saying, iPad + EVO is really a fantastic combination!

    Option B:
If you can't afford to keep both, then keep the EVO, and start saving for the iPad!

Personally, I have chosen Option B (tough times now) ...

Thanks everybody for the great feedback. It is good to know so many people are in the same position as I.

Sorry Covert that you don't get it. My net book is up for sale on amazon...what a useless purchase that was...really. And if any of the other 3 laptops I personally use were worth anything. I would sell them. I do have a 17" laptop that I still have to use from time to time...but around the house for casual computing, the iPad is the most portable device I have ever owned. I am in bed on my back browsing this forum and typing this up right now. This is significant because I have a lot of back pain. I got the netbook to try out as a much lighter alternative to carrying around excessive weight, and also to be able to lie on the floor in the evening with the nb on my chest...but it was only very marginally useful. And as a "go to bed companion" just as useless as my 12" Mac.

The iPad is perfect...all the way around. It is not awkward at all. There are very few things or times I would prefer to use a laptop. I have a desktop with a dual screen, one of which is a 28"...VERY nice. At work, I use a desktop with 3 screens all connected or a dual screen with a mirrored projector as a 3rd monitor also. So, when it comes to actually needing to design my web pages (everyday) or culling and editing photos, I much prefer or simply can't do it on even the 17 incher.

In fact, I have articulated in the past few weeks that the iPad is the freedom from the laptop similar to how the laptop was freedom from the desktop for me in 1994 with a Mac Duo 280c (for those of you who may remember that beautiful creature). 16 years of lugging around laptops, most of it over my shoulder, so, yeah, I am DONE with laptops!

After reading these replies, I can see how I will end up with the EVO. I guess part of the deal is that the Palm Centro has not reached the end of its usefulness, yet. So it is just the money issue now. Re accessorizing...belt clips, chargers at home and work, both cars, extended battery for road trip, USB cables for tethering, etc.

I pay about $75 mo total for two phones on sprint. We both have unlimited data but wife is on a LG Rumor...good for txsting...but not for browsing. And, now, $30 more for sparse 3G. At least here in SETx, the 3G for ATT is subpar at best. I have had a good Sprint phone signal when the ipad had to switch to Edge...so I am really wondering how the 3G of sprint would have worked.

So, $105. If I add just one EVO, for the wife, monthly bill will jump to $130 per month...plus I would still probably have to keep the $15 plan for my iPad. Adding an EVO for me will only cost more upfront for the unit...and I would drop the iPad 3G data packet completely...and just chalk up the extra $130 I pad for the 3G iPad to have 9" gps that I didn't really need. Does the EVO have a built in gps?

The camera is a huge selling point for me...and I keep forgetting about that. I have been dreaming of the day cell phones had high enough resolution to get an 8x10 from it. I had photo students turning in work from 5mp cell phones this past school year. It will be very interesting to see how this phones camera picts turnout. Certainly better than my 1.3".

    What about some small issues?

I have my iPad JBed...I think I understand that doting the EVO is the same. But what about apps? I have been using palm for many years...since giving up on a long line of Newtons...and have quote a few apps on my Sprint Palm Centro. Are there plenty apps on the EVO? Easy to install?

I played with a functioning demo...long enough to Learn that the built in browser allowed ID browser change...a nice touch. But it still screwed up hotmail. Google Docs was better, but still not perfect, at least not in the spread sheet I attempted to edit. Maybe it was a matter of time?? Does google docs work flawlessly on the EVO?

How about typing? Does the keyboard have a forward delete? Does it have arrow keys? These are my main two pet peeves about the entire iPad. Typing on the ipad isma love hate thin. I love how quiet and generally easy it is to type. But I hate trying to fix things. Like trying to go back and fix the typing errors in the previous sentence would be a PITA. And to go back to say the first part of this post would require a bit of a trick with the lack of arrow keys.

Thanks again for all of you alls time. Very much appreciated in helping make this decision.

This is exactly why you shouldn't have purchased a device that serves no real purpose.

Based on your gushing over your love affair with the ipad i say keep the ipad and forget about the evo. We are all different. I personally think the ipad is cool. But only in my house. For this reason i dont own one. I am a little to self aware to be the guy who carries a hybrid computer everywhere with me. I've seen a few people in public and i just think it looks a little "off".

Now i am not saying its wrong.

Especially for you. Reading your 2 post about the joys you and your ipad are having i wouldnt want to break that relationship up. Your relationship with your ipad sounds better than most peoples relationship with their wifes.

I dont think it was you but someone even painted the picture of a lazy sunny day in the park cuddling up with the ipad and sharing a movie..... not for me.

Based on your use and reviews i think their is too much potential for a letdown with the EVO. Or any 4 inch screen. If you are so comfortable carrying around a 10 inch screen then why go to 4inches. Most want evo for portability. You dont mind lugging around ipad so why go down in size?

How can you like the iPad??

No USB, no Flash, no sd reader function, software releases approval dictated by the supreme One (SJ). It is a socialist's model of the world ;)

    Is there gamepad function ?

Besides, the EVO already is a mini tablet. Really.

Not to mention the iPad it is a slippery thang!

M11X kicks the iPad's butt :) I have one of those and an Incredible :)

EVO and an iPad seems too much.

Apps. Too many to mention but my most utilized are Omnigraffle and sketchbook Pro.

Replaced my organizer/calendar. Phone is too small to use at meetings w/clients, etc.

I know, iPad is cool due to the apps, but the constrained design bugs me. Just seems wrong and reminds me of one of those touch devices the dictators made students use in the movie Serenity ;)
