    Hi everyone,
Sorry for this post but i'm wanting a little bit of info.
I have an HTC Desire whick I have rooted using unrevoked3.
I believe it is rooted cause I have the little ninja icon in my apps menu.
Trouble is i've sort of jumped in with both feet without knowing really what i've done.
Basically what will rooting do for me.
I've got a recovery menu when I switch on my phone while holding the volume down key.
I've explored it a little but not selected anything cause I dont know what i'm doing......
    I know I know....why have you rooted then ?
To tell you the truth...I don't know.
    Just like playing I guess.
But now i am rooted....what next
This may seen really obvious to most but not to me.
Have I been a bit of an idiot or am I now on the enlightened path to mobile heaven.
    Thanks

ok, well if you dont know why youve rooted then i can say that maybe you were a little silly and stayed with a stock device but youve done it now so you might aswell find out what you can do with a rooted device and see the benefits of it.
Be warned, you will semi brick your device many times while testing and trying stuff out. this is completely normal but will make you shit yourself a couple of times. as long as you do a backup from recovery before making changes that can kill your rom then you will be fine.

1st things 1st: make yourself a gold card while youre device is still working, this will give you further options should anything ever go wrong with your device and you need to downgrade the hboot.

2nd: what carrier are you on? what software version are you on?
the above is important as you may need to RUU at some point. the correct ones can be found at shipped-roms.com

3rd: have a look at custom roms and see what benefits they give you, plenty can be found here
    Desire Android Development - xda-developers

once you start tinkering around with roms and stuff you will understand why you rooted.

Just to confirm, do you need a Gold Card even if your Desire is unbranded? I knew Gold Cards were needed if it was a branded handset but can it come into play for unbranded if it all goes wrong?

    lol

That's a lil harsh Rastaman, none of us actually need root, aren't we all here because our inquisitive little minds like playing with stuff we shouldn't?

depends whether your device is truely unbranded or not
people thought the WWE devices from india/asia were unbranded but infact they are branded to htc india/telenor which is an asian network.

no one should skip the step of a goldcard. it takes 2 minutes and saves you a lot of hassle if you need to do anything like downgrade hboot to apply an older RUU

    how is it harsh?
if he doesnt know why he rooted then its a dangerous game.
the people who are inquisitive do alot of reading and research in the event of failure and generally have a direction to go when rooted.
if you dont have any direction or reason to root i dont understand the concept of rooting because you can and no other reason.
people who go off and root because they want to do something with the device have more success in getting out of a mess if something goes wrong.
people who blindly root thinking its like "jailbreak" for iphone end up in bother and need alot of help getting it back.

i dont even know what rom he was on to start with. if he is on an up to date voda or orange rom. there is no RUU that will unroot it for him.
all these things need to be taken into account.

EDIT: sorry for the ninja edit , if you noticed he called himself an idiot and iif you re read my post the context is in jest

    Hi Rastaman

Ive successfully rooted my Desire and flashed the Leedroid ROM which im more than happy with at the moment.

I was on an up to date Vodafone UK ROM prior to rooting and was kinda aware that their wasn't an RUU available.

Should the phone need to go back am I bu**ered or would it be possible to downgrade to a 2.1 vodafone RUU (if there is such a thing) ?

Also, will it only be a matter of time before an up to date Voda RUU is made availale or might it never happen.

Just wan't clarification of where I am really. If im stuck should the phone develop a problem then I may just stick with Leedroid, and keep my fingers crossed instead of further tinkering.

it really depends, I cant remember whether the 2.1 voda rom listed was prior or post slcd. if was prior then you will end up with a screen brick if your screen is slcd.
no one has leaked an up to date RUU, its whether or not we can get a leak so we may never see one.
worst case scenario you can try and flash an unbranded RUU if you have a goldcard and send it back unbranded as HTC may not tell you off or call the warranty void if its running their standard build

    Thanks for everyones input.
    And yeah.....
    I am an idiot...nuff said....lol
Anyway, gonna make me a goldcard first as suggested.
Thanks Rastaman-FB for the link to the roms, your right though...should have had a little insight in what I was doing before actually doing it.
Hopefully I won't get into too much trouble in future.
    Thanks again guys

were here to help mate, have fun tinkering. we all get problems through too much messing, eventually you learn to remain calm in the event of failure and fix what was failing.
