Just wanted to check in and say whats up. I'm trying out the droid eris after using the moto droid for 1 day. I'm hoping to move from the iphone 3gs and att. The iphone has been great since the original, I'm just getting bored with it. I hate constantly jailbreaking. I love to customize my phones and this is one of the few weaknesses of the iphone. I also do not like that everything in the iphone is its own app, there is really no integration with the main os. I tried the moto droid first but didn't like the size and weight. I couldn't see myself carrying this around in my pocket all the time. So far I love the eris, but will be keeping an eye on the battery life. I have used a unlocked htc magic from rogers on att so I am familar with the OS. I also plan to possibly develop for android so I like the openess of the OS.

Welcome! You made a great choice, IMO! :D

Read the battery life sticky on top and make sure to do the deep discharge 2-3x. Pay attention to your awake % (make sure it matches or comes close to your actual use time) and you should be good with battery life.

I removed my phone from the charger at 7:30 this morning. Current awake time is 15%, I've been using it a good amount this morning and on the battery meter I'm only missing 2 bars. So far the battery has been great. Wifi and GPS off, but I'm running newsrob every hour and weatherbug every half hour.

welcome. came over from iphone too. one thing i really like about the eris is the size..much more pocketable than the iphone for some reason.

And for me verizon's network. life without dropped calls is very very very very refreshing.

I think a big help will be a larger battery from a provider that does not require a bigger back. sounds like the 1750 made for the Hero is close and perhaps a slight re-design will allow something like that to fit in the eris without a new battery cover.

That would make a HUGE difference in useability.

    (also slingplayer, audible support, etc.)

I was thinking the same thing. I'm up in Boston and work in a pretty tall building. The 3g on the iphone did not penetrate the building, therefor I always had edge. With the eris, I'm getting perfect 3g. I assume the lower frequencies of the verizon 3g pentrate buildings better.

It gets even better. I was on train from NYC to DC and the verizon network held on the ENTIRE TIME...DID NOT DROP ONCE EVEN THROUGH TUNNELS on on long call.

Iphone would have dropped 25+ times (at least).

Also was on a call in a tall building in wilmington. got on elevator..road down to basement. walked through garage and verizon HUNG ON THE ENTIRE TIME. Iphone would not have made the elevator.

Welcome! I'm surprised someone coming from an Iphone has the courage to be open minded about other phones lol. Verizons network is great just read the stickied battery life thread and you'll be in love

iphone is a great device....but is not a functioning telephone. I find it amazing that people continue to use it on AT&T. Having multiple AT&T phones, the iphone was the worst of the AT&T phones on that score.

I agree, i came from the iphone.in my opinion is the perfect phone for me,but at&t ruins the experience. Its a shame that it won't be on verizon anytime soon:(

I've been with verizon since 2000 and i can honestly say this is the most happy i've ever been with a verizon phone.Glad i returned the droid.

that was my issue with verizon. phones were always so big. I tried the older curve which was ok but was a lousy multimedia phone. I am pretty happy with Eris form factor and the keyboard that has two letters on it in portrait mode. I can fly on that thing.

Ok so I've never had a smart phone before and was concerned I will not like any of the ones that verizon had until I tried the Droids. First I had the motorola droid and it was awesome, spoke to the VZW guy at the store and he told me that if there was anything at all i didnt like about that I can switch out for the Eris. Which I did so because I really like the functionality of the sense UI (restock fee $35) after 10 days with the phone i've had it with the battery life, tried all the task applications, turning off the mobile network (GRIMSTER) and still I can't last past a day with this phone. I need to make calls and this phone just isn't cutting it.

Software wise this phone is sweet, but I decided I'll go back to the Moto droid since It was able to last 2 days and still have some battery. I tried to swtich it at VZW store and they told me NO. You can only switch once, if I had a problem I had to swap batteries which I know isn't it because were all having problems with it. To cut this short, the only way they'll take the phone back is if I pay the Early Termination Fee and then I can sign up again. This is such b*llshit, to be stuck with a phone that wont cut it.

I might just pay that ETF and sell this phone, maybe sign up when the passion comes out. I dunno, what do you guys think? I'm new to this forum but seems like you guys all get along and know you info.

If you want to change it out call verizon from the handset 611. They will switch it out without issue. Half of the people at VZW stores are tools anyways and dont have a clue #justsayin. If you work at VZW and know what your doing then thats great. Having gone through 4 Storm 1 and 2 Storm 2 i never deal with the store and call first that way its in the system.

I have called, I went to a store first and they told me to basically live it with and stop being a baby, Well I can be a little picky since I'll have this phone for 2 years. The VZW customer service guy was nice be he said that there's no way around it.

Lol I did the same thing. On the 6th I bought a Droid and that replaced my Storm 1. Loved it so much that on the 13th I ported my AT&T # iPhone over to a secondary # on Verizon and got the Eris for my second line. Now I can use my Google Voice without having to hack / jailbreak a phone.

you must be too nice about it. Scream and yell and get upset. Think as if they're stealing from you. The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

I found this post over at the crackberry forums. I did this with my BB Pearl and the 1st enV. So it works:

You can only switch ONCE during your first 30 days. There are NO exchanges after that. Now, with the official stuff aside....

For example, you got the Storm2 on launch day and then the Droid came out...you switch. That's your one and only switch.

If you take back your Droid (within the 30 days from the Storm2 purchase date) you'll get a full refund. The Storm2 launched on Oct. 28th. So you have until Nov. 28th to return the device (Droid) you switched for from the Storm2.

Wait 3 days (activate an old phone on your account). After 3 days, your upgrade will reactivate as if you had never used it. And you have the option to upgrade again! You can pick a phone...let's say the Eris...and you don't like it. You have one switch you can use.

If you wait the 3 days you are able to upgrade again as if you had never upgraded.

Ok so I went to the VZW store and I got that phone drop from my contract, the only thing is I don't have a phone for the next 3 days. This might be a perfect time to wait to just wait out for the Passion, thanks for the help.

Awesome! I'm glad it worked. Its importiant to try out a phone before you get stuck with it for 2 years. I know they have all the phones at the store, however, it would be nice (but impractical for business) if they let you have 2 phones for a week and use them side by side.
My Eris works for me, but every now and then I wonder how the Droid would have been different. Somethings, like the SenseUI, which look cool for the first few days might not be as useful down the line (or worth giving up a nicer screen and battery life on the Droid). But I guess I'll never know.
