Turning Off Default Messages Unread Count

Right now I'm using Handcent don't get wrong its a great app but I like using the default message app on my Evo. I tried using SMS Popup but it never marks the text as read if I replay with that option on. So I was wonderig if theres a way to turn off those tags on the messages icon? This only happens with HTC Sense turned on if I use Android Launcher it marks messages no problem
