Twitter hype???

+1 on the RSS comments. I recently signed up for twitter and removed everything from my RSS feed reader except for my web comics, and just subscribed to all of the same sites on twitter. It's much easier to receive and share the information.

I could care less about when my friends are pooping. I do enjoy getting headline/tech/science/world/sports news as soon as it happens, though.

I can understand if people don't like twitter for the "Hey I am eating a burger" nonsense that some people tweet. But it is one of the fastest ways to get news updates, especially for sports and tech news.

That what I use it for also. People use it in a nonsensical ways but it can be used for real and useful info also. Some individuals who tweet are real somebodies in the tech industry and actually do have things to say worth reading. Also, many informative websites provided information for those who follow via twitter. My view is if you don't like something, don't use it--but why dis people who do like and use it?

Twitter has some uses. It is a great way to do field reporting from an event. I use it for my race team when we are running. It allows for quick, concise updates, pictures and such with almost zero overhead. (much cleaner than using fb for this sort of thing)

An easy way for friends, fans and family to follow along and a significant improvement over having to do a blog entry after returning from the track.

Now, if "real" life would stop getting in the way of the racing (LOL)...

Let's not forget that during the Iranian riots, Twitter was the only way for people on the ground to send updates.

Saying Twitter sucks because of all the stupid posts is like saying the internet sucks because of people's stupid personal websites.

To be clear, I was genuinely asking out of curiosity. The only hype I had seen or heard was the celebrity stuff and as the saying goes "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn", or something like that lol.

Okay, so I am seeing a different side of it and my curiosity is peaked. Those of you that use it for news feeds and tech info (like droid stuff), what have you found to be the best tweets(?) to subscribe to for the most accurate and quickest news info?

I have a lot of the main news sites, CNN, BBC, etc. You can even follow certain categories, such as the twitter account for CNN tech news and BBC tech news. I also follow engadget, joystiq and kotaku for my other tech-related needs. There are A LOT of Android twitter feeds out there and that's how I found out the Incredible was rooted, and the Evo. I use twitter lists to manage all of the accounts I follow. You can check my lists here for some feeds you might want to follow :) Twitter / Lists sontaikle is following

It's not all about "I ate a hamburger five minutes ago!" and it can be a great source of information and breaking news.

I'm a twitter addict! I also want a career in social media network marketing. I thought twitter was stupid when I first joined probably because I had no followers, lol.
I'm a beauty blogger and alot of people that I met via blogging are on twitter and we post sales, random quotes etc. It's a great way to keep in touch w/ friends.
My dad 'didn't get twitter either, he doesn't use it to 'microblog', he follows news & tech blogs.

Well said.

It's all about what it does for YOU. I use it to keep abreast of tech news, social commentary, and devotions with friends of the same faith.

Don't wanna hear what Oprah is doing? I fully understand... don't follow her.

It's all what you make of it. The common misconception is that everyone on Twitter is ego-driven. For every Aston or Brittany on Twitter, I can give you a regular person who uses it for a fairly serious end.

Heck, it is a HUGE business tool. Every consumer issue I have had in the past two years has probably been resolved via Twitter. There is a reason major corporations have Twitter accounts, and staff them with their brightest PR staff.

Case in point: I had an issue with HR Block year before last... software issue. I contacted them via phone, and then sent a tweet to their Twitter account. Within 20 minutes, a senior exec had called with two years worth of free tax preparation software.

Again, it is what you make of it. It ain't for everybody, and it might very well be a fad, but I have met some very, very good friends and made some great business contacts with it. I have also been able to enhance the ministry of my organization with it.

I admit... of late, it has been my vent tool during the World Cup... :D

People who think Twitter is pointless because they don't want to see what people are eating or whatever need to give it a chance. If you don't want to see what people are eating, then don't follow those people! It is as simple as that!

I do web / graphic design, and following designers and design blogs on Twitter gives me loads of new info and keeps me updated in the design world all in one place.

When I had my N900, I followed various people who give out general news and application news for the device, very helpful. I must look for Android alternatives to keep me informed in the Android world!

Then there is the tech blogs such as Engadget and Gizmodo, I keep up to date that way.

I also have some friends who use Twitter too, and follow people I find interesting. I'd say about 10% of my Tweets I read are about stupid things, where as the 90% majority are very informative, and keep me updated with the news and things I find interesting.

Not to mention Trending Topics, sometimes it's interesting reading about what people are talking about on a certain subject thats popular right now. A lot of them are silly, but there are some good ones when big events happen - lots of information to be read that way!

To sum that up... I use Twitter as an information portal first, social networking site second.

Facebook is worse for the "just having a burger" updates by far!

Twitter is great if you want to follow live events, because updates are quick and easy. I too am a twitter fanatic and i tweet very regularly, sometimes several times every hour if im really bored. Although it doesnt do much for me and my friends, i find it fun to do. It also a great way to find out what your friends are up to, even though you dont really spare a thought about them.

I don't get it either. Anyone who needs to notify everyone what they are doing and where they are has one hell of an ego and should not be encouraged with "followers". Anyone who reads what other people are doing and where they are is just an idiot.

Get out and live your own lives guys.

I think you missed the point.

I use twitter in 2 ways and with 2 accounts (both managed in Seesmic).

1st account is used for quick news updates. I follow a variety of different people and organisations and this list changes all the time. As soon as I know longer have a need to follow someone they are removed from the list.

2nd account is a personal account with friends. This I really use as a replacement for texting (you don't think texting is for idiots do you?). It's much easier (and free) to use twitter and I can attach pics and videos. I can also send a message to all my friends or DM (direct message) an individual. No I don't post what I'm making for lunch .

scrolled all the way this message and realized you were the first person that touched on this.

mass texts.

i am a student pastor on staff at church with a student ministry that averages about 450 students and the total church averages about 3,000. you wanna get news, messages, updates out real fast and effectively? twitter. there are now ways for people to subscribe to text message alerts and essentially they are using twitter, but they dont have to go through and sign up for an account, so as a staff we can just update the various twitter accounts for church and everyone who has taken the initiative to subscribe gets the updates. this will be very helpful when we take about 500 students to camp in a couple of weeks.

Fellow student pastor here... I double as the church digerati, so I manage the church's twitter feed as well as other social networking accounts. Now, most of our followers on that account are associational people, but we do get pinged quite a lot from it.

Now, since cell phones are practically ubiquitous with youth, the mass texting option just makes sense. How do you have yours set up? Group tweet?

Personally I find twitter idiotic. to me it is like boiling facebook down to the single update line at the top of the screen. and i really don't care much about what anyone has to say in just one sentence, let alone feel the need to follow it or reply in kind.

So what you are saying is that you have yet to use Twitter...

I had the same opinion of it before I DL'd Touiteur and signed up for a Twitter account. Actually pretty useful if you set it up the way you want to use it.

I don't use it to follow my friends. I follow comedians, a few Hollywood types (Kevin Smith tweets a lot!), a few porn stars (nothing like off the cuff pics from a few hotties to brighten your day lol), and a bunch of tech blogs (droid-life, crackberry, engadget, etc). I don't need to refresh pages all day to get the latest news and for me that's what it is all about to me but each twitter feed is different and that is what makes it what it is. You don't have to know that your friend ate pizza last night and is gassy today if you don't care.
