I've been lurking on this EVO forum ever since the announcement of the phone and am very excited about the phone. I am currently an droid ERIS user on verizon but the EVO and sprint's cheaper price is finally making me go to sprint. However, when I watch/read more previews for Galaxy S, that screen just looks really nice. Only if the EVO had the same screen.... Besides the Sense UI vs Touchflow (?) argument, galaxy lacking flash for camera, is there any argument to get the EVO? They both have 1500mh battery but super amoled is supposed to be more energy efficient so I'm thinking that will last longer. I'm hoping some of you can give me insightful unbiased opinion of the two. Thanks!

evo all the way. i think the evo's screen will look pretty darn good in person. add that with the cheaper price you mentioned and i think your decision is pretty easy. i just think it will be really really really difficult to be disappointed in the evo and once you make the switch you won't think twice about it.

Well both have alot of pros. The EVO's camera is going to be better at 8 mp instead of 5. The EVO will also have a front facing camera. The Samsung Galaxy would be better for gaming with the hummingbird processor. I personally do not like the UI of the Galaxy it is too iphoneish for me, but if that is your cup of tea, then so be it. They both will be running android 2.1.(as of now. the EVO might come with 2.2). But the other difference is that the EVO will run on 4G, which may not be in your area but it blows 3G out of the water. The Samsung Galaxy has not been reported to go to Sprint as of yet, But if your happy with your phone just wait til the EVO comes out in "summer", and there should be more news on the Galaxy S. Then you can make your own educated decision.

Actually the S can still have a better cam and better video quality. Most prob will anyway.

At the CTIA they said it was rolling out with a 5mp camera with no flash but still could record 720p. It has already passed thru the FCC with AT&T bands.

I personally think that the Evo has the leg up mostly because of Sense. Samsung has developed beautiful hardware for a few years now, but they always seem to get in their way with crazy UI crap. Take the Behold II. Beautiful screen, but they crammed more buttons below that screen than most netbooks have, and added that damn cube UI!!! Seriously, Vanilla Android like the Galaxy would have been sooooooo much better. I really like the Galaxy S from what I've seen so far, but the user experience of Sense is something that I, personally, cannot live without. Yeah, I know you could root and flash, but whatever; that's just me. I also wonder about Samsung's motives: they haven't been shy in talking up Bada as their 'big meal ticket' of sorts for the future. HTC is firmly behind Android, and I behind them.

    That's my 2 cents-peace.

Mega-pixels really does nothing to establish the quality of a picture. A quality 5MP camera could blow away a crappy 8MP camera...and Samsung cameras are usually pretty good.

As far as the Galaxy's processing power, yea there's a lot of stuff out talking about it can handle 4 times more polygons than a snapdragon, but I would be incredibly surprised if a game comes out that needs a Galaxy S to run smoothly, and the Evo and other Snapdragon devices are underpowered. And obviously I'm talking about within the next year or so. Game and App developers want to make sure their product is as compatible as possible - they wouldn't limit their audience to one specific phone but making it too tough to handle for a Droid, Incredible, Evo, etc.

Also don't forget 4G coverage. If you live in a major metro area, I would get the Evo (even if you don't have 4G coverage yet).

The Galaxy S looks like a great device, but A) there's no timeframe on its release (yea, I've heard late June - but that looks flimsy), and B) no price on it either (rumored $1000 unsubsidized?? Yikes). Obviously it may just come down to whichever fits better in your hand :D

Hardware aside, lets talk carriers. Today its Sprint vs. AT&T. And AT&T is crippling all their android offerings. Are you cool with that? Rumors are saying Galaxy will be heading to all carriers but AT&T is the only one at FCC.

Yes, Samsung bastardized Android with its horrible Bada like UI. There are certain companies that are good at hardware, but should never touch anything software. Samsung is one of those companies.

In terms of the actual screen hardware.. I think Evo wins hands down. AMOLED screens don't reproduce colors correctly and terrible outdoors. If Evo's screen is anything like HD2, that's nothing to be disappointed about.

I feel like both are going to be great options but the EVO has the edge. 4.3" screen, 4G, HD video and playback, dual cameras with flash, and looks better IMO. I wouldn't be surprised if the Galaxy S got better battery life but I'll just keep a car charger with me if that's the case. Super AMOLED is impressive but not enough for me to choose the Galaxy S. I would also be worried about Samsung...I've seen countless posts where I see people say they will never buy a Samsung product again.

The Galaxy S will run the Super AMOLED, which is supposed to be vastly improved on the regular AMOLED and fixes outdoor issues. Just to be fair...

Just to note that more megapixels does NOT mean a camera is better.

rumored is its coming to sprint in june as well. The galaxy is a sexy phone. Id consider it over the evo for the following reasons:
processor is better x 4 more graphic processes its capable over the snapdragon and iphone processors

    Super AMOLED

but the one turn off.. its samsung the gods of locking a phone down.

HTC has Sense which I'm sure will be better than Samsung's skin.

Only thing is Samsung's super AMOLED, but everyone who's seen the Evo raves about the screen. I haven't read one bad impression from the screen on the Evo.

samsung has some keen features, but after getting a couple of blu-ray players from them, i won't look in their direction for electronics again. granted, they work, but they're just so cheaply made with a lot of cut corners which i've learned to live with.

Your post title is very misleading you asked for unbiased opinions of the Evo 4G vs the Samsung Galaxy in the Evo 4G forum. Thats like going to the Apple Rumors forum and asking an unbiased opinion of Apple vs Windows, that's just not going to happen. Every single opinion here will be biased contrary to what anyone might tell you everyone who reads this forum is rooting for the Evo.

I tried to be as unbiased as possible :D

I ultimately think nothing will be able to take advantage of the Galaxy S' impressive spec sheet - and it runs a hideous iPhone clone interface.

I am just curious as to what options would make a 5 megapixel camera better than an 8 megapixel camera on a phone platform. I don't know much about cameras or cameras on the phones.

Its easier for me to understand that it can work that way on a dedicated camera with the different zooms, lighting, and lenses. But I am not sure if the same applies to phone cameras.

If I am way off let me know.

As an uninformed regular Joe, I would expect an 8mp camera would be better than a 5mp on the same kind of platform.

An optical zoom instead of a digital zoom would be nice (I know, I know I'm a dreamer). Theres a Canon EOS D30 with 6mp yet it kicks the bleep out of a modern day snap and shoot 14mp camera. Why? It's all about the lens quality. How fast or slow it snaps pictures or whether it can or can't do both and how it enhances an image when it zooms. For example a digital zoom will digitally enhance an area and make it appear closer, while an optical zoom which is mechanically made to physically zoom on something would make it look x50 times better.

If it ran plain ol' Android w/o a skin, I would get it over the EVO in a heartbeat.

    That screen is breathtaking.
