you should be able to do it with the SE update software:
Here is one way to do it.
    1, Go to: Sony Ericsson - Support - Softwaredownloads - Detailed - Updateservice - Xperia? X10
2, Download the Update Service application
3, Run the application as administrator, and follow the instructions.
NB: This will reinstall your mobile, all data will be lost.

Then set up a new Google account, and make a note of it somewhere, incase this happens again.
    :)

That wouldnt work roger, as he can't remember the email account used.

    Try this:

Go to Phonebook, Contacts, Menu, Import Contacts, Memory Card and you should get a dialogue asking you to import form Phone Contact or the registered Gmail address. The Gmail address should be visible. Hope he remembers the password.

Alternatively, open the browser of his PC, go the Gmail log in page and double click in the username field. Hopefully it will have remembered the log-in email.
Otherwise you'll have to follow wynney666's tip.
    Good luck.

If I understand correctly, someone tried to unlock the phone by guessing the pass phrase and now the phone is permanently locked?

yes, and as OP said his son wasnt sure which email address he had used, so only option to my knowledge will be my earlier solution.
