Root Unlocked phone...forever?

I just bought an unlocked Motorola Milestone and now want to root it. I dont have the unlock code that was used to unlock the phone, does it matter? If I do a hard reset or root it or load a new rom like motofrenzy does the phone ever become locked again??
Is there a way I can look up what the unlock code was, somewhere in the phone?

Flashing the phone should work and no it shouldn't lock again.
