I've been pretty happy with my G1 thus far, but I turned it on this morning and it gave me a screen showing multicolored bars and the following text:

    Code (Text):
    1.
    2. DREA100 PVT  32B
    3. HBOOT-0.95.0000
    4. CPLD-4
    5. RADIO-2.22.19.261
    6.
    7.
    8. Sep  2 2008
    9.
    Later down it says "Serial0".

Please help me, I don't want to wipe my phone and loose my data on it!

I haven't rooted it and have no interest in rooting it. I got Cupcake over the wire, not via hacking.

Update: removing and replacing the battery caused the phone to work again.

Sounds like you were at the bootloader screen. Were you possibly holding down the camera button by accident when you turned it on?
