I have update.zip in the root of my sd card. I'm pretty sure its created by Android because I didn't put it there. What is it?

    android didnt put it there

its rom manager that puts it there when you click "flash clockworkmod recovery"
if you open the zip you will see a load of recovery stuff

Why not just install ROM Manager and click "flash clockworkmod recovery", if you want the file that's installed that way?

Not sure what is this update.zip file. I don't have it on my SD card.

Using Google (you know, that somewhat common website that I occasionally hear people talking about) I found this link with a download:

    Download Android v2.2 FROYO Update! (FRG01B) | Nexeo.net

Are all update.zip files the same? I'm guessing not, and it won't matter if someone sends it.

    It is a different update.zip

This one is for fake flash clockwork recovery.

Why not explain your problem fully and perhaps we can help

It's not that simple: there isn't a single "update.zip for android 2.1". From your posts in other threads it seems your problem is with a tablet, and you won't be able to run software built for the HTC Desire (the phone we are discussing here) on that.

(Edit: remove bit that duplicates SUroot's post)
