    Hi folks,

I've been wanting to upgrade to a Desire for the past few months now and the day is nigh.

I am concerned about the upgrade process - I am currently on Orange and I have heard that if I upgrade through the Carphone Warehouse I cna get an unbranded phone.

My wife has a Desire also and the amount of branded apps on the device is quite unreal.

My question is: if I do upgrade through the CPW, can I keep the contract I'm on already - or would I need to change that to one of theirs?

The branding doesn't really bother me, the price of the contract does however :)

sometimes you will get a better deal going through the networks direct so it might be a good idea to try playing each off of each other. I was going to get allsorts thrown in with orange until they realised they had none in stock, so o2 got my business. generally though they will both offer the same contract deals just orange may be able to offer a discount (especially if your an existing customer). One thing ive always found is asking them for their best deal then phoning the retentions department and telling them you want your pac code as the deal you were offered was an insult considering your an existing customer. This tactic usually yields the highest discounts ;)

However, the CPW ones are usually unlocked which will be better if your planning to root especially as the new radios can cause havoc with orange phones if not unlocked (worth reading up on, i never intended to but ended up doing it and it was well worth while)

I'm due an upgrade in 8 days on Orange too. Thought about going to CPW but I don't think I'll get anywhere near the deals Orange will offer direct. I would like an unbranded Desire as I'm not in a big rush to root.

I'll probably end up phoning Orange to see what they'll offer me and then going to see CPW to see how close they can get to it.

It took me a while to settle on the Desire having been initially swayed by the Samsung Galaxy S. I kinda feel something new and more desirable is only a couple of months away from release too but I'm desperate to ditch my ailing Blackberry.

I wouldn't mind sticking to Orange as my wife uses Magic Number to call me without digging in to her minutes.

I'm on a similar contract as wz4jc3 except my existing contract is 18-month on Dolphin 25 and I have -

mobiles.co.uk (a CPW company) sells the Desire unbranded.

I don't know about CPW itself..

I upgraded my orange contract via phones4u (a while ago to upgrade to hero). Just go in to CPW tell then you want to upgrade and they will get you a better deal than your current one. It works pretty much the same way as upgrading with orange.

CPW and phones4u effectively have special deals with the networks to get you better tarrifs (in theory). For instance Phones4U offered my the same contract terms as orange did, but they also got me an extra 10% off that orange themselves wouldn't give me.

Even though to get this 10% off, he sat in front of me and rang orange. Strange how this industry works..

Hi, I was looking around for the best deals on the desire a few months ago, didn't go with CPW or Mobiles.co.UK because of site reviews!

I did however manage to go down the retention route with Orange since I was an existing PAYG customer.

Initially they offered Dolphin 25 with 200 mins doubled to 400 with UL txts + bolt on UL Internet, then with loyalty drop tariff down to

I thought the Desire handset was free for upgrades? I didn't pay for my handset when I got my Blackberry last upgrade and I certainly don't intend to pay for my Desire next week when I upgrade.

Am I right in thinking you do not get a cooling off period when buying direct from the shop? Whether it's Orange, CPW or P4U? I am lead to believe that the cooling off period is only applicable with web and telephone orders. Can someone confirm this?

Not sure with upgrades but normally you get a cooling off period when you sign the contract.
For upgrades CPW is the best place to go as all the handsets are unbranded & unlocked, wish i had got mine there.
No orange crap to get rid of

anoniemouse - thing I found out today at CPW is that they have to migrate your contract if you upgrade with them, rather than just being able to stay on the contract you're currently on.

As I mentioned above, the cheapest contract they offered me was

You can debrand using a goldcard but if you update from 1.15 to 1.21 then you get wifi problems or a simlocked phone. leaving you no option but to get it unlocked

Man, can you imagine how i feel?
I've ordered the device on tuesday, my phone company said it would be at my house within 5 working days. 9For the phone company that's monday - friday, for the posting company involved it's monday-saturday)
I was keeping an eye on the company's site to see if my phone was sent almost 5 times a day!
On thursday it said it had been sent and they gave me the Track&Trace number.
On friday, the T&T site said "Driver's on his way".
I was like "NOOOOOO!" because it would get delivered at my dad's shop, which was closed that friday. So i hoped they would deliver it at one of the sops next to it.
Tough luck, that evening the T&T site said "Delivery failed, 2nd attempt following".
Well, ok. Saturday's good. My dad was at the shop the whole saturday, so I kept checking the T&T site.
I almost pissed myself when it said "Driver's on his way". But on 16:00, it gave me the terrifying news: "Delivery posponed to next working day"

    It was soooo close :(

Ahwell, tomorro's THE DAY! :D:D:D (Pissed myself from excitement)
