I will try and answer these as best as I can
No, you should be able to buy the phone and then activate it on your own. I am 99% sure of this.

Best buy offer insurance and it is a little different than Verizon's

This depends on if your on a family plan or not. If you are the primary on a family plan or a single line than share everything is your only option. If you are the secondary on a family share then you will have an option to chose a data plan.

Correct...it is FAR worse. Google "Best buy black tie protection" and you'll see what I'm talking about.
You can get Asurion coverage even if you buy the phone from Best Buy. You can also get insurance from Square Trade or potentially through your insurance carrier (which is probably the best goal).

Although to be honest, unless you're getting it from your insurer and they offer a good price as a benefit to their customers, you have to be very careless with your phones to make insurance worth it.

But I thought best buy among other retailers were price matching online retailers such as amazon wireless. I've read a post on s4gru.com (a sprint based site) to that affect.

Check newegg.com and that other website that sells electronics on the cheap.

I upgraded my daughter's phone at best buy and had to activate it on the spot. It was a Christmas gift and a surprise so I wasn't that pleased. They activated it momentarily and then switched her line back to her old phone. Ironically, she was on the phone talking to a friend when they did it so she knew something was up.
