Help USB device not recognized

When I connect my phone via USB to my laptop or my desktop using any of the USB ports, my phone blacks out, goes to an Android start graphic, briefly shows the home view then blacks out over and over. It does charge albiet slowly. I turn the phone off so it will charge fully. In addition I get an alert from Windows "USB Device Not Recognized". Works fine when not connected via USB.

Any ideas?

Update- Well I got the PC to connect to the phone by updating the HTC sync driver but I still can't use the phone when it is plugged in to the USB. Screen goes dark and none of the buttons function and the charge light is lit.

i have the exact same problem! my magic hase worked on USB to put my MP3 collection on the sd! 2nd time arround it kept rebooting and usb device is not recognized??

already posted on a dutch forum (because im dutch) but they couldt help out!
