The internet at my apartment is always cutting out, so I use PDAnet to surf the web on my computer a lot. However, I'm aware that charging my phone off of USB messes with my battery life -- it's had a noticeable impact already.

Is there any way to connect your phone to your PC and use debugging features WITHOUT charging the phone?

Nope. Your PC is always outputting 5V over USB regardless of something being connected to it while its on.

And how does charging over USB mess with the battery charge? Its still the same, it just charges slower.

I'm not sure how charging with a usb would mess with your battery life, but you could always root and use wireless tethering.

But then again, it would absolutely rape your battery life. Fully discharging the battery is far worse for it.

Yeah, i realize that, but I was just giving the OP options. Maybe they would feel more comfortable leaving the phone plugged into an electrical outlet to charge while tethering via wifi.

Personally, I would just use the usb tethering.

Bummer. Well, thanks for the tips, guys.

I've read a few places that USB charging is not only slower, but results somehow in the battery discharging more rapidly. I don't really see why, either, but my own experience since I got the phone in November seems to indicate that it's true.

According to the diagrams of a USB cable, there's one wire dedicated to power and three dedicated to other things. Do you think just snipping the power wire would do the trick? I have a few spare USB cables lying around, so if it's likely to work I might try it. What do you think?

not sure why youve experienced worse battery life when charging with USB unless your USB is jacked on your PC....... for everyone else Ive ever discussed it with the opposite is true...... the slow trickle charge from USB seems to improve battery performance
