I am new to this and not tech inclined. However I would like to know if using GPS tracking software in my Rogers HTC Magic will drain my data plan. I do not have 3G and just use GPRS on a prepaid card (I am in China)

I would like to try using one of many GPS tracking products such as Open GPS Tracker but wonder if this requires a data link, or if the GPS works separately. I guess if I want to view the route or path of my travel I would obviously have to use data to view a map.

Not sure if I am being clear enough. If I go for an hour bike ride and want to later view my route I do not want to be using my GPRS for an hour as it will cost me too much. But at the end of the ride perhaps I can then use it to track my path. Thanks
