So, My Eris is coming either tuesday or Wednesday and I have a simple question in regards to rooting. After i extract the bats to the Tools dir in the Android SDK do i just open the tools directory and run them that way or do i open a command prompt and run them from there? yes i'm a root newbie

Edit: Whoops, just looked at your post again. Before you attempt rooting, you should check the phone's bootloader version before you do anything else. There is a fair chance that you will receive a phone with 2.1 pre-installed, and (worse yet) the "1.49 S-ON" bootloader.

If you have that bootloader - "1.49 S-ON", there is no need to attempt root (currently not possible from that phone state).

If you have 1.47 S-ON, you should be able to root.

okay so what would i type to run it just in the command prompt "run c:\android-sdk-windows\tools\install_root.bat" and then "run c:\android-sdk-windows\tools\install_extras.bat" correct?

or "cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools" then "run install_root.bat"?

yes, i know about the boot loader, i'm hoping to get a 1.47 hopefully since mines new it should still be on 1.5 and on the old boot loader

Sorry, I don't recognize those ".bat" file names - what root method are you thinking of using?

FWIW, the two things that most newbs stumble over are:

- getting the Eris device drivers installed and verifying that they are working
- using the command line.

If you are not familiar with using the command line, you should bone up on it a little first. Specifically, find out what the "CD" command is and how to "set your PATH" variable. Google is your friend.

Sorry, I should have got that from the title - missed that.

I've rooted and unrooted my phone several times now, but have never used that script. I'm DL'ing it now to have a look at it.

I will say that GrdLock put that post up some time ago, and some of the files bundled in there are already outdated. ( Edit: judging from the file name, it has the most current Amon_RA recovery: v1.6.2 as of 6/7/2010 )

Not that they won't work, they will. (The ROM you won't care about, because you will likely replace it with something newer).

Hang on - I'm still DL'ing.

To answer your question, though, my guess is that they will have you run the script from the "tools" subdirectory of the SDK installation - and probably will have you unpack the "all-in-one-rootscript_0_3.zip" file into the same folder.

I'll confirm this in a couple of minutes. (Edit, yes - confirmed.)

Also, how would i go about Flashing a rom? i see plenty of rooting guides but cannot seem to find a guide on Flashing a rom such as "ErisLightning"

What i know to do(or at least gather from piecing together) i'd place the zip file in my SD card and start my phone by holding vol down and power and install there right? after doing a wipe.

OK,

I looked at the script involved very quickly.

You want to perform options #1 and #2 only (Root your phone! & Install Amon's Recovery) in the script "install_root.bat". The instructions in GrdLock's post tell you to unzip the all-in-one-rootscript_0_3.zip into the SDK tools folder, so, yes, you would "CD" to that directory in the command prompt, and execute the script from there.

NOTE: This script does NOT install drivers for you. You should get them installed before you run the script. You should verify that you have got the drivers running correctly so that "adb" from the PC communicates with the phone. This can be checked by running the command

Code (Text):
1. adb devices
at the command prompt (from the tools folder of the SDK). You should see your phone's ID reported as part of the output (starts with "HT9....").

You move the ROM zip file to the SD card's root folder, and then boot into recovery by shutting down the phone, and holding down Vol-Up+End/Power until the screen lights up - about 10 seconds later you should see the Amon RA menu. One of those menu items is something like "Install zip from SD".

Another thing which comes in very handy is the fastboot utility. You won't need it if the all-in-one script works correctly, but it is very handy to have around. Once the S-OFF bootloader is installed to your phone, you can reflash things (like the recovery partition, radio, or god forbid, the bootloader) using a single command with the phone in fastboot mode.

You can find it here at HTC - Developer Center. Look about midway down the page. (Nothing else but fastboot is of interest to you here on this page, since the other stuff applies to a different phone; the fastboot utility is not phone-specific, however).

Good luck - I guess you can't really test any driver installs until you have the phone.

Oh, Hey, i thought of a question that isnt root related but as you are an eris user you might be able to answer this. Does the Eris support Rhapsody? it doesnt say so on the verizon site but people said that its comin this week and rhapsody says the eris does support rhapsody so i'm not sure.

Okay, so i downloaded the fastboot that you mentioned and tried to place it in the Tools folder in the Android SDK but it gave me a "file already exists" pop up

The SDK can be installed ahead of time.

FYI, all the complications of the SDK and the associated complexity of the driver install can be avoided by using fastboot (you still need a driver, but it is possible that it gets installed when you install HTC's Sync application - it was so long ago that I did this I can no longer remember).

It won't hurt to have the SDK though, and learning the ins and outs of adb and the command shell (on the phone) can provide you with some powerful (albeit command-line driven) tools.

While you are waiting for your phone to arrive, you might want to poke through this thread, starting from post #28.

You'll see that there really are only two fundamental steps that are required - loading the root-ROM with HBOOT, and getting the recovery onto the phone.

No worries then. (I'm using Linux, perhaps it didn't ship in the Linux release in the version of the SDK that I DL'ed).

Sorry, missed this one (I'm multiplexing). Lemme check the Market (which has been acting strange lately, but then I've been bopping between ROMs, some with A2SD, some without).

My Eris pulls up "Rhapsody (Beta)" - v 1.2.8.6, 1.09MB as a Free app. (I guess the service requires a subscription?)

Yeah 15 bucks a month, it would piss me off if all my music was worthless cuz the eris doesnt support rhapsody. But a beta is a good thing
